Remington LA

I have a Remington L/A that I am looking to do something with.
I am more of a paper pusher than anything. Any sugestions as to what caliber to make this thing.
Looking to shoot 600 yards with it.

Tim

Tim, don't let the fact that it's a long action influence your caliber choice too much. Anything from a 6BR to a 30-06 will work fine in there and for 600 yards, any of those and everything in between will work. I shoot my 30-06 in a lot of NRA prone matches, but I love my 6BR and 6XC too! The 30-06 is a lot of fun and it's really accurate if the chamber is right and the loads are right. It's the classic "long action chambering" in a sense. FWIW, I normally shoot 53.5 H4350, moly coated Sierra 190's, Lapua 185 FMJ or Berger 185 and all are very good. I use LC Match brass, but there is no shortgae of good 30-06 brass out there.

Look at Gary Eliseo's Tubegun stocks for the long action, the R10 stock) I think you'll like it. www.competitionshootingstuff.com

Thanks for the post German. I found the link very interesting and I will look into it further.
I was thinking 30-06 and was not sure if that was the way to go or not. I am going to do some more research.

Tim, I've shot the 30-06 in Highpower for a loooong time, with some breaks here and there to dabble in other calibers. I got the Distinguished badge with an M1 and shot XC with 30-06 bolt guns for a long time. Now as a dedicated prone shooter I still use the '06, though less than before; only 2200 rounds through it this year while the 6mm's have twice that.

Get a 30-06 reamer with a 1.5 degree leade angle like a .308 has, not the old 3 degree leade. Get a good supply of brass before you order the reamer and specify a neck dimension that gives you about 0.004" clearance on loaded rounds. Kiff's "Serengetti" reamer is perfect, but watch the neck dimension, unless you specify otherwise, it's 0.340" which can be a bit big, depending on your brass. If you enjoy turning necks,I do...) turn them to 0.00125" and use a 0.331" bushing, neck tension will be just right.

Lay in a supply of Russian,Wolf) large rifle magnum primers, H4350 and your favorite bullet in the 180 to 210 range. I like 1:10" twist barrels, but a 1:11" twist will handle everything through the 210 anyway.

Over this summer of shooting 500 yard matches with it, I was averaging 597 of 600 with 30 to 41 X's at each match, prone, irons). It's a winner even in today's world. I can go on for a long time about the 30-06, but you get the idea, it's fun and accurate.

I use Lake City Match, I have 61, 62 and 67,year of mfg.). I just got some Lapua and the case capacity appears to be the same.

Tim, as to Gary's stocks, it's about a one hour job to put it all together. If you have the barelled action done ahead of time, make sure to get the recoil disc from the kit to your gunsmith - that's a key piece as it takes the place of the conventional recoil lug.

I recently assembled a 6BR version for a friend while we were at the range shooting a Smallbore match. Each time we took a short break between targets we performed another step in the process. By the time the Smallbore match was over and the range clear, he was ready to test his new 6BR. It was very nice that 100% of what we needed was in the kit, no outside shopping needed.

I have an RT10 kit on order now and am really looking forward to it. Now all I really need to find is a more hand filling AR15 type grip that is suitable for lefties!

Best bet is to send Gary an email through his website as there are options that can change the price a bit. $995 is the normal price.
