Remington Alpha -1 factory ammo ?

So.....With Remington extending the mag wells in the new Alpha-1 series, will they make any "specific" factory ammo to take advantage of the extended magazine lengths ? If so will they use other makers bullets (Berger, Nosler, Lapua) or will Remington come out with their own ? How will the much longer jump affect standard ammo now produced ? Just wondering.......

Well they could always change specs eg. 223 Rem vs 5.56. or Rem 6 BR vs Norma 6 BR. I guess I'm curios about the much longer jump for those that don't load their own.

I’m with Adam on this. Too many variables. They want ammunition to fit with as least work for them to do as possible . It ain’t like they aren’t charging three arms and torsos for ammunition and components now.

Nope.

This change in magazine dimensions is a specific accommodation for handloading ammunition. Remington saw the opportunity to make some customers happier by extending the magazine length while making the twist rates more 'modern'. This is a sales point for Remington to accommodate the current trend of shooting heavy (longer) for caliber bullets. It extends their potential for many more shooters to buy this new model when buyers may have just walked on by.

Factory ammunition is the province of SAAMI unless you work with the very custom ammunition makers who will develop a load and then load for you. The liability for anything other SAAMI would crush this idea right from the start.

:)

So How will the standard ammo work with the long jumps. Going from a 2.80 AOL to a 2.95 AOL has got to cause some issues.

That's the question, right?! 90% of the buyers won't be handloaders so they'll need SAAMI freebores for SAAMI ammunition. The handloader will still be held to a shorter overall length unless he puts on a new barrel or if they sell these actions separately for building custom rifles.

Ya know, Yes, I'm pretty sure I haven't bought a factory round in centerfire in 30+ years. Yes..I'm pretty much wondering how the factory ammo will work in the new longer mag lengths. A .195 jump on a lot of ammo is pushing it IMHO.

It likely depends on the bullet design. Some apparently do quite well with ridiculously long jumps. Others may not. As with most endeavors involving commercial ammunition, one probably has to buy a box and test it to determine how well (or poorly) it shoots in a given setup. In any event, having a very long jump does not necessarily have to be a deal-breaker.

Am I missing something? Changing the magazine length doesn't affect jump. I haven't seen anything saying that the throats are being lengthened, so where does this jump increase come from? Longer mag box means you can lessen jump (assuming handloading or some other non-SAAMI ammo) and still fit the round in the mag.

As an aside, my factory Rem barrel had a ridiculously long throat anyway. Can't see more jump making much of a difference in that anyway.

This, It won't have issue with factory ammo, they will still use SAAMI chambers. It just gives handloaders a little more wiggle room with seating depth.

The mag length doesn't have any thing to do with jump to the rifling. The factory chambers will still be cut to the same saami spec and the factory ammo will still be made to saami spec, so factory ammo will still have the same jump when the cartridge is chambered in the rifle.

I once had a long action chambered in 243 win. There was a lot of extra room in the magazine but once the cartridge is pushed into the chamber then the mag length is irrelevant. Same thing with a 6br in a short action. You have a lot of room left in the magbut the bullet jump is determined by how the throat and freebore are cut in the barrel.
