remington 7br brass to 6br

I searched for this but didn't find anything compelling so are there any negatives to necking down Remington 7br brass to 6mm to shoot in a 6br Norma chamber? it'll just be for clay, steel and groundhog hunting.

I believe the 7 rem br is a tad shorter than the 6 br .
Tryed it and did not care for the results.
Just sayin.

I do not recomend it. You have a proven cartridge and want to use inferior brass. Use Lapua or Norma brass and only cry once. You will waste money and time trying to get the necked down crappy remington brass to shoot.

OK I was just curious. I wasn't trying to skimp here. I have 350 rem 7br brass and wanted to check before i sold them.

If the chamber reamer "fits" the Rem. brass - that is, measures no more than .468", .200" ahead of the bolt-face, you should enjoy satisfactory results using the 7MM BR Rem. brass, which usually measures about .463-.464" just above the extractor-groove. Most contemporary reamers cut a .4715" or, > diameter at this datum point, thus, are more suited to the LAPUA dimensioned brass, which usually measures close to .469". I have used some of my 7MM BR Rem. brass in .30BR chambers (.4715" at the .200" DATUM line) with excellent precision (competitive in registered benchrest events). The only down-side, compared to the LAPUA brass, was relatively short case life due to loose primer-pockets - 8-10 firings, where I expect 200+ from the LAPUA. I have not experienced this when necking down to 22/6BR, and using my "old" reamers, which cut .466" diameter. Just stuff to consider - if your smith has an "old" reamer, and you have a bunch of the Rem. brass, that isn't a bad option. Good shootin'! RG

Yes, as stated the overall length will be shorter than the Laupa or Norma brass. The difference is in the neck length so carbon buld up could be a problem that will have to be cleaned out before shooting the "Norma" length brass. My un-fired 7mm Rem BR brass measure's 1.512" where the Laupa measures 1.558" overall length.
