Remington 788

I bought one of them when they were $89.95... Mine was in 6mm Rem. I was a mere 18yrs old at the time. The rifle needed to be free-floated, glass bedded and have a trigger job done>>>NONE of which I could afford! However, the rifle shot factory ammo pretty well... I put a Bushnell "Custom" 3 x 9 on it!! Great gun for the money!

Howdy !

I heard you can use a trigger off a Rem 541, on the 788.

Steve, Is this rework the same as what Timney sells?

No, Timney's is an original design and somewhat better than the reworked 788 trigger. The best approach is to find an old Canjar trigger for the 788. I wish I'd bought three when they were in production, instead of one. :( [br]
As Boyd said, the Timney will work just fine, mine does.

The basic issue with the 788 trigger design, beyond the lack of adjustments, is that the same spring is used for the sear and trigger. It pushes up on the sear, and down on the trigger. Years back, a company used to sell an inexpensive kit that contained three different springs for that trigger. I installed the lightest and found it a big improvement. If you already have a 788, I can understand why you would want to improve or replace the trigger, but if you are considering buying one, unless it can be had for a bargain price, I think that a 700, or 722 would be a much better choice.

Boyd, I have three 700's now, a 223, 6BR and a 30BR. These are all set up for target shooting (barrels, triggers, stocks) and are not allowed in some of my clubs shoots. Had a chance to buy this 788, its a 308, paid $400.00 (?), to use in these competitions. The rifle is in very good shape but is not very accurate in its present form. Am working up loads now, but need to do something with the trigger. Thanks, Bob

My first CF rifle was a 22" barreled 788 in .308. They came with a 10" twist, and mine did not like light bullets. It did pretty well with 168 and 190 grain SMKs, with 4064. I floated the barrel, skim bedded it with Microbed. The stock finish was nicked, so I scraped it off, and bleached the stock with hot water and laundry bleach in the bath tub, let it dry for a couple of weeks, Fitted a recoil pad, and finished it by rubbing several coats of Tru-Oil. Sometime later, I installed the trigger spring. Being on a tight budget, I loaded with Lee Loader, dipper and all. The scope was Tasco's cheapest 4X, and I really thought that I had arrived when I horse traded into a Bushnell spotting scope, bench top tripod, and an Outers rest and bag setup. Life was good 30 years ago.

My 788 started out as a .308. It shot well and was throated long so it saw 208 grain A-Max single loaded. A bunch of H414 in a Palma case got me to 2450 fps in it's 20" barrel. I recently had Pac-Nor screw on a 8tw 24" 6X47L chambered barrel finished to .850 at the muzzle. Stuck it in a Stocky's laminate stock I opened up the barrel channel on. Someone previously had worked on the trigger which breaks at 2 lbs. First group had 4 of the 5 105 grain A-Max touching at 200 yards! I fell in love all over again! :-* Good luck with and enjoy yours! ;)
Now you got me thinking I need one in .22-250AI with an 8tw barrel......
FYI- Don't push it has the bolt handles are a weak link.

Went down to Ace and picked up a spring for the trigger. Dropped it from 4 1/2# to 2#. Gonna load up some different loads and see how it works.
