Remington 722 enthusiasts

Order me up a 721F, no make that two; in that vintage 30 Holland's Super caliber. I'll scope them both, load test, then stick them in the safe between my OM 70 and the FN Mauser custom 300 and 375 H&H's.
Wouldn't that be nice! Although, the price you would pay may not be :). Holland's Super 30, the correct name for the cartridge, you are showing your age! :)

Here is my story on my Rem 722. I originally made an offer to a guy on what I thought was a Rem 788 in 222. My old brain was confused on models. The seller corrected my mistake & graciously rejected my offer. I was still interested because he offered me a really good deal if I'd take the 722 with the original stock that someone had messed up pretty bad. The butt had been sawed off an inch & the plate then screwed back on, for a kid I assume. The sling swivel holes were filled with some ugly mismatched beige colored putty. There were some other big gouges & holes in the forend which were also filled with the same ugly putty. To top things off, the barrel's front sight holes had been filled with solder.

A recoil pad fixed the LOP, an ebony forend tip & ebony grip cap fixed the gouges. I had the barrel cut & crowned at 24" to get rid of the soldered holes & provide a new crown. As per a standard for me, I pillar & glass bedded the stock. I refinished the stock with multi-coats of Tru-oil. I learned a lot from this project. BTW it shoots fantastic like a .222 should!

My Rem722 story: Remington commercialized the 7mm08 around 1980 and I really wanted one. Around 1985 I was at a gun show in Phoenix and found a all original 722 in 257 Roberts for less that $100 , it was in rough shape, stock banged up pretty bad and the barrel had been rusted at one time. It was well used. Serial # said it was mfg in 1948. Someone had used the shit out of it, probably a kid that was now an old man, probably bounced around in his pickup cab for years.

I bought it and ordered a stainless Douglas 20" match barrel chambered in 7mm08. Had a local gunsmith install the barrel, go over the action, and blacken it with some process that I don't remember. I bedded it in a Lee Six synthetic stock, installed a Leupold Vx1 2-7 scope and took it hunting. I'm still using it. Both my sons used it for their early deer and elk hunts, and now my 10yo grandson will be using it this year. I really like the straight bolt handle with the big smooth ball handle. Only upgrade I've done to it since then is have Kampfeld Custom install a new extractor as the old one was about to fall out. Still a sweet shooting rifle that has take more deer and elk than I can count along with a few antelope, bear, and coyotes.

They had gun stores in Phoenix in 1885?

I own a Remington M-722, which I had it rebored and chambered to the .458 X 2" American. The barrel was a heavy type and chambered for the .244 Rem. cartridge.

It is a Lyman Alaskan 1 1/2X. The glass is great, but not enough power for my 82 yr old eyes.
You are in the same condition as I am, only 6 years younger and free of macular degeneration. I need good light, well rested eyes, and a high quality unclluttered lens.
Good luck. I appreciate reading your posts, articulate and founded on experienced. Keep them coming.

Thanks Bill. I do have macular degeneration, but it is moving very slow. I do need more light.

My only advice is to have a very well trained retinal specialist follow you on a frequent basis. I had that when I suddenly lost sight in my left eye 2 years ago. Imnediate treatment has me seeing at 20/60 and stable in that eye now.
