Remington 722 enthusiasts

My son started deer hunting with a 722 in .300 Savage. Reloads with 165 Noslers will do about 1-1/2" for 5 shots. Good enough for deer and elk fairly close.

He now uses a restocked (Boyds) 721 in .300 H&H for his elk rifle. Shoots 5 168 Berger VLDH in less than 1/2" on occasion. Better for longer shots in West Central Idaho.

He just took possession of his late maternal Grandfather's 725 in 30.06. Seriously doubt it was shot much.. We are planning on working up a load for the same Bergers. 24" barrel makes it easier to handle and pack than the 26" H&H.

All three are nice, utilitarian rifle that shoot reasonably well ( we'll see about the .06) and well suited for their intended purpose.

This from 1958 Shooters Bible. Apparently the last year the 722 was offered in other than standard grade. The 1959 Shooters Bible lists the 725, a "Deluxe" rifle, and the 721/722 show only the "Standard" grade. Note that in the specs, the .222 and .244 now had high comb stocks as standard and high combs were available on other calibers at no extra charge.Scan_20250108 (2).jpg

That 725 is a very special rifle.

NOPE, they were bargin basement rifles designed for average Joe and to undercut the pricing of arch rival Winchester and the awesome Model 70. They are good rifles. I have a 722 in 257 Bob and a 721 30-06.

The 722 in 300 Savage must be a dandy deer rifle for woods hunting. Darn close to 308 ballistics, close enuf that the deer won't notice.
Only drawback with my 722 .257 Roberts, and it is or isn't depending on what bullet you want to shoot, is the very short magazine. Seems it was designed around the 100 grain and 117 grain RN bullets. Seating a pointy 115 grain Nosler BT so the loaded round fits the magazine is on the ragged edge of having the bullet full caliber bearing surface below the case mouth. Not that you need to use a 115 when you have things like the 100 gr partition and even the ol 117 round nose bullets. The roberts case is long enough that Rem should have chambered the 721 in the roberts.

I think they all had the stamped bottom metal. the only difference was the quality of the wood. My 1950 vintage Model 721 in 30.06 can still shoot half MOA. The stock in my opinion was ugly and not very comfortable, so I put it into a Boyds walnut stock that fits me much better. I did save the original stock for posterity!

Wouldn't that depend on what you are hunting and how accurate the rifle shoots a bullet of that weight?
Indeed! I'd like to load it with 168 Berger VLDH in front of IMR4350, or W748, or RL15 (all powders I have) for Elk and Deer. That said, DGP4 was kind enough to give me some valid info that I will certainly consider. A bullet and powder workup is planned for this particular iron.

Order me up a 721F, no make that two; in that vintage 30 Holland's Super caliber. I'll scope them both, load test, then stick them in the safe between my OM 70 and the FN Mauser custom 300 and 375 H&H's.

kind of a rare thing, but if you could buy an old Flaig stock, that would be great to pair with your older 721/722. I bet someone on this site has one, so if you do have one,,, shoot me a PM!

What is the lead time on your order?
