Remington 722 action Question?

First I would like to say Hi to everyone,I have lurked here for sometime but finaly found a question the search button can't answer.
I am starting my first rifle build project. My end goal is a lightweight hunting rifle in a 7mm-08 Improved. I have come across a Rem Model 722 barreled action in a 300 Savage. My question is, would this action be a suitable starting point for my project? I am familiar with the Rem 700 action, but not the 722.
Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Fred

That particular rifle is one of the rarer chamberings. You might find that you can sell that rifle, buy a new 700 action and have money left over to put toward the rebarrelling.

Dittoes on what Tom said. The 722 was introduced in 1948 in two chamberings - 257 Roberts and 300 Savage. An original in either caliber is collectable.

But, it's not our place to tell you what to do with your stuff. To answer your question, the 722 is a perfectly good action to use as a basis for a custom rifle. The 700 is nothing more than a 722 with a few cosmetic changes. The original 40X CF rifle was really a 722.

Go for it.

I really love to build em as much as anyone, but I sure wouldn't loose a wink of sleep leaving that one as it is.
Depending on the shape, you will be a long ways toward a custom action if you choose to sell it.
I for one wouldn't part with it :)

If you do choose to use it for a custom rifle you can use the Rem 700 firing pin assemblies and the Rem 700 triggers will work if you machine off a little of the receiver to make the safety work. I have a 722 that I used for a 22-250 with a douglas barrel and a 40x stock and it shoots great.

Unless the 722 you found is a 1st year rifle, I would not lose any sleep over using the action for a project.

I have two Rem 722's in the safe. One is not a 223 AI and the other is a 243.

The 722 actions, in my opinion, are better actions, all the way around. Better metal, machining, and craftsmanship.

Here's a 722 in 300 Savage for sale on gunbroker.com:

Take the money and run!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I will reconsider on the 722 action and look for a 700 action. Where is a good source for one? Or would I be better off going to Wally World and picking up a discounted Rem 700 or Model 7 and start my project there?

A lot of donor actions come out of Wallyworld, and you can sell off some of the parts to help out...

Try your local gun/pawn shops first. A lot of the smaller outfits will order any gun you want for $25 over cost. Besides, shopping locally feels good!

A 722 action would be an ok place to start, depending on price. Don't pay too much for it. They're a good action but there's nothing especially wonderful about them.....it's just a cruder version of the 700 and no more well-made. Rebarrelling that gun wouldn't be any loss.....there's nothing rare about the 300 Savage and most of the large boltface 722's you see are in that chambering. Now, people can price their guns any way they want but that seller on gunbroker or wherever is way off in delusion-land. One of my rifles was built with a 722 action, originally a 300 Savage) and it's a good gun.....it also has a 700 bolt, trigger, floorplate, and stock. Sitting in the reloading room there's a 722/.222 that'll probably come under the knife. If given the choice, I'd rather start with a 700.

thinking about turning this one into a new one, or selling and starting over.
