Remington 722 stock

A friend recently aquired a Remington 722 in .222 caliber. Since then he has rechambered it for .223 with a 1 in 14" twist and had it cut down to 24 inches. The barrel diameter was also cut down from a straight taper to around a medium heavy varmint. My first question is, which bullet weight is going to be appropriate for the 1 in 14" twist rate? He will most likely be handloading his own rounds.
The second question I have is where would he locate a new 722 stock? The stock on the rifle appears to be a ram-line or something similar with a aluminum block installed under the action to make it a single shot. The stock was originally designed for a Rem 700, so now the rifle has no safety or bolt stop which is a concern for him as this rifle will be carried in the field. I have searched for stocks but havent located one for a 722. How much difference is there between the 722 and 700 stock design (Obvious things were the action screws, the old stock had an extra one added). Will a laminated 700 stock be easier to tweak than a synthetic? I hope this was enough info, if not I will find out more for you.

Your 1-14 twist will be OK with bullets to 55g. The rear tang on the 721/722 is a bit different than the 700. Requires removing metal to get a good 'blend' from metal to stock. Keep a eye on the auction sites for original wood or might check with MPI or McMillian for a synthetic. Do away with the 'center' screw by fastening the trigger guard to the stock instead of the action.

Thanks shortgrass. Could you tell me what metal needs to be removed exactly? If it sounds too in depth we may have to get someone else to fit it.

Too complicated to try to explain, gotta' have it in hand. The last one I did took about 45 min. with a 90 deg. die grinder and several course sanding discs, and a fine one for finish. Looks to me like a less than skilled hobbiest could screw it up, pronto!, with power tools, stock too.

Contacted Stockys website today, they said the 700 BDL short action stock would fit, just needed new metal and some fitting as Shortgrass said. I appreciate your advice.

i have used a lot of 700 stocks on 721/722's,never have removed any metal from the tang and they all will work,if you retain the 722 trigger on a 700 ,stock material needs to be removed so the safety lever will clear, his best bet now if he doesn't have the safety lever and it's a 722 trigger is to install a complete 700 trigger, they will work, but need to remove metal along the tang as the 700 safety lever won't clear without doing so.It's kind of trial and error on how much,i have a 722 sitting in a 700 classic stock as we speak and can send some pics of how it fits, but i have the 722 trigger in it,the safety levers won't interchange on the triggers and a 722 complete safety may be hard to locate??
