Remington 700 Varmint SF 22-250

Anyone out there own and load for a Remington 700 Varmint SF, 22-250? I am having problems developing a load for this rifle. Looking for offset from the lands. I have been experimenting with it of and on for several months and can't seem to find the right distance off the lands. I have jammed it and backed off and still can't seem to get what I feel is satisfactory groups at 100 yards.

Another problem I am having is that the first shot will be 3/4 inch high and to the right and then the next two will be tight just below it. I am ready to chuck this thing into a lake. Need help.

I went through the same thing a couple years ago when I bought a new 700 VS in .22-250. I played around with seating the bullet out to the lands and close to the lands, best I could do was 2.5" groups.

Was a frustrating venture, nothing worked. In despair I posted on a forum for help. Someone told me to try the length listed in the loading manual and give up on seating to the lands. Tried that and groups came down to 1/2".

What bullets and powder have you tried?
What scope do you have on the rifle?

I am loading 39.2 gr of H380 and a 52 gr Berger bullet. The scope is a Bushnell 8-24. Not the best scope on the market but very stable and has held zero with no problem.

I feel that if I can get the OAL set properly, I can then work on powder load.

I don't know that maybe I might be expecting too much from the rifle. Last week I shot 8 three shot groups and averaged 9/16 inch. I have tried setting it to Saami standards but the shots blew all over the targets.

What is your twist ? You need to tailor your load around the twist. Try seating your bullet the diameter of the bullet into the case. (.224) Also back off that load and work up. I load H380 and a Nosler 50 gr BT with great accuracy. I use CCI LR Primers. The 50 gr Sierra BK and Hornady V Max also shot very good. 38.0 grs of H380 was the magic load for a long time.

Well averaging 9/16” isn’t terrible.
I’ve never been that big of a fan of H380 in my 22-250 loads - I know it’s often said to be a great powder for the cartridge. Try varying your powder charge a little in both directions.
You could also try Varget, IMR 4064, 4895, WW760. These powders have worked in my 22-250s

Don't know what stock and trigger you have but my 700 would not shoot under 1" until I changed the trigger and stock.

Does the stock forearm touch the barrel? Had to hog out a lot of plastic on my 700 ADL stock.

Remington 700 VS 22-250
Winchester cases
BR-2 primers
36gr Varget
55gr berger FB

I started .012 off the rifling, 2000 rounds ago, now I am .070 off the rifling and it still shoots .3 at 100 and the last time I shot it several weeks ago, I was able to go 9/10 on the "T" box at 600 yards. I have .135" of the bullet seated in the case. Barrel time soon.

I run Varget in my 22-250 VSSF II.
My rifle is a 3/8 MoA shooter with 50/55gr Nosler BT’s.

Have you checked the bedding, especially behind/in front of the recoil lug?
Many of these rifles are lacking in that area.
Look for ANY rubbing on the bedding block, a skim bed, recoil lug bedding may just help.

Cheers.

Nick, Here is some info from Berger that might help also.

Good info from Berger and it does work.
Also Remington probably has a throat so far out you will not even be close to the lands. Most all factory barrels you'll never touch the lands. I would start by trying seating the diameter of the bullet (.224) into the case and go from there.

Thank you for this. I downloaded sever articles from this site. Very informative.

If it were me I’d go maybe .02 shorter then whatever you did last then increase longer incrementally with about 5 rounds each. If they were all similar I’d go with the one off the lands closest to whatever gave me a little jump. How are your shooting it? Is your loading sound? Brass sorted? I know people have a million ways to test lands but I still like my way of using a modified case with a semi tight neck and I seat the bullet deep then shove it in the chamber with my finger and tip the gun, it will fall out, tap bullet out a bit measure and go again, repeat until it sticks then I use that as a reference point.

That's the same method I use. I use an RCBS 1500 scale and then check it with a balance scale. Ad or take a few kernels till it is exactly where I want it. Clocked it today and it was spitting out at an average of 3743 FPS with a 5 fps differential of 5 shots. I can't load any better than that. I am anal about powder loads. After I determine the COL I will then start the powder ladder. I really hope I can find a good node with a slower velocity. I load six bullets and shoot two three shot groups. This allows me to compare the two groups.

I hear you on the measuring powder exact. I’m not comfortable enough yet with my own shooting so I’m always trying to reverify findings. I hope you can get this thing down to under half inch. Your velocity spread is absolutely spot on. Not sure if it’s my chrony or what but I’d be jumping for joy if I had any string under 10fps spread shooting at roughly 3050fps.

Are you needing to magazine feed? I shoot a lot of 22-250: factory and custom, and they usually always shoot good with n135 and 52gr benchrest bullets. I cant get a non hollow point to shoot as good it seems. I believe sierra still makes a 52mk. Id try that and some 322 or 8208 if you cant find vihtavuori.

I had an 90's vintage VSSF, actually two of them in 22-250. They shot well with Varget, 35 ish grains IIRC, Fed 210's, and 50 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. Shot almost as well with 55 grain ballistic tips too. Not sure about the new versions and quality control. Mine were in HS precision stocks with aluminum bedding blocks.
