Remington 700 trued action Options?

you can buy a custom action for the same price as trying one up.... no reason to true rem actions anymore. Buy quality the first time
I think there's wiggle room between custom and factory semi custom. I think I have 585.00 in my Remington's after trueing by my gunsmith. He's very reasonable and a good machinist. Career job is a machinist and gunsmiths on his free time. If I had to pay a full time gunsmith to do it, I'd go with a custom. Plus I have a bunch of Rem actions laying around.

If you can get it that cheap its nice. But not the same for many. Even at that its still a remmy. Doesn't add value... but if you never sell it it dont matter either..

Since you're contemplating a BR rig, have a look at Shooter's Corner. They've a number of them available. I would generally consider the barrel to be 'shot out' but maybe not. For some of the prices, especially now, there may be something that will meet your needs since they will have the stock, trigger, action, etc. and save you some $$$. Any of them would be better than a 700 Rem IMHO.

I checked out the link, and yes it does look like there are a few that I like. I have a brand new never shot custom barrel chambered in 6 bra so I've got it covered if the barrel is shot out lol thanks for showing it to me

I never sell guns. I give them to kids or keep them. It's only about the best price for accuracy I can get. I have customs and honestly they are no more accurate than the Remington's. Nicer, yes. Just won't kill any better than my semi customs.

With the options available in todays market, it boils down to the options you want and how fast you want it.

Truing a M700 isn't a horrible idea but it depends on how far do you really want to go with the action.

I've been playing around with RemAge prefits so a trued up M700 is worth it to me as I got a safe full of viable donors but these aren't match rifles; more or less tools to fill the freezer and impromptu steel/rock guns.

That being said, Kelbly and Defiance get my money when I want to get serious.

That's the thing you can get a good custom action for about the price of truing a 700 and it is machined better with better features. I would never start out with a trued 700 again. Have in the past and have a couple still in the safe but no need anymore.

Nice article on the bulletin about trueing R700 actions

LOTS of BS out there, on the Internet and even,.. HERE ! The Newer, RR actions, ( Made on CNC Machines for the last, several YEARS, now ! ) have been pretty good, as threads are "usually" fairly square to face, the Lug's "lap in" easily, etc ! Put a bbl'd action in, a HS Precision / Mc M Stock, etc. and Bed properly, add a Jewell, Bix, or Timney trigger, Fit a GOOD, Criterion, Shilen or PacNor Pre-Fit and, you're IN business !
Maybe, NOT Bench rest, Match winning quality business,.. but "close" !
BUT, you "may" have,.. Extraction "issues" ( Not, real expensive to, fix ). I used, a New RR, S S Rem 700, L-H action for, a 6 XC Rifle with, a Criterion Heavy sporter Barrel and it shoots, 87 V-Maxes, into 1/2" groups at 100 yds and the108 Berger, Elite Hunters, Cloverleaf in the .3's, so far. IF you are looking at using the Rifle for,.. "informal Target", Steel Plates and Hunting, Varmints / Deer etc. They are,.. FINE !
Spend, the Extra $1,200 / $1,800 for a Custom Action and Gunsmith, fitted Barrel IF, you want to, COMPETE !
PS; if, the action Threads are "dicked with" ( AKA, Trued up ) DON'T plan on using, a "PreFit" barrel on it, unless, it's Custom threaded. There ARE, Millions of, Happy shooters with,.. Remingtons !

Read the Post again,.. Custom FITTED Barrels on,.. Custom actions.
Talking,.. Brux, Bartlien, Krieger's fitted by, BR Gunsmiths.
Most BR, Scopes cost MORE than,.. my whole Rifle !
He will NEED to SPEND MORE $$$'s to compete in BENCH REST Matches and,.. BE,.. "competitive".
2 different "classes" of Rifles here,.. Mine cost $2,000 but it's NOT,.. a "competitive" BR Rifle.
Just trying to point out, the DIFFERENCE to the OP

Customs are no longer $1200-1800. Again, you can get a Bighorn Origin for $825 and be much better off than any 700 action.
Agree that, the Big Horns, a nice action
But, Will the Big Horn WIN, a BR,. "Match" ??
Most USE,.. Bats, Nesika, Borden's, Stillers, etc
A "competitive" BR Rifle with, Scope, probably will end up costing OP, $5 to $7 K or,.. more
Somebody, could probably tell us,.. ANYONE ???
HOW much does, a Match WINNING BR, Rifle,.. cost ??

Oh I missed the part where the OP said he was wanting to compete in and win BR matches.
NO problem, Mark wants to build, a 6bra for BR ( Post 14 ) and I just "assumed" he planned to, WIN,. "some" !
I do know that, "winning" BR shoots is, gonna cost him, some $$$'s

So why would using a Bighorn Origin instead of a 700 be a bad choice when he has an action made to tight machine tolerances over an action having to be fixed to be workable and spending the same money?

This past November, I decided to build a 6bra. I started piecing it together as the O.T. at work would allow, then the over time dried up. Fast forward to now, the over time is about to kick back off, so I've been shopping around, but since Remington filed bancrupsy it's gotten hard to find a trued action. I was planning to buy one from Northland Shooter's supply, but they don't carry Rem. 700 actions any more. Anyone know where I can buy a trued action, preferably with the bolt and recoil lug for a similar price?
Stiller Predator as powderbrake has mentioned. About the best you can do for the $. imho

RobO1,..
Agree, that the Big Horn "option" is probably, a BETTER way to go for the OP than, trying to "True up" a Rem 700 Yup,.. LESS, costly ! I tried to point out that, MINE was NOT Trued and shoots "good" but, NOT,.. Match Winning,.. good. Does, a Big Horn,.. WIN, tho ??? Hey, I'm NOT,.. a BR competitor.
Saw that, most Competitors are using,.. Bats, Nesikas, Borden's, Stillers etc. for actions, Krieger's, Brux and Bartliens for Barrels,. ON,.. the WIN Lists ! Just an,.. OBSERVATION !
Agree with,. Totoro's post #25 and pintopete's #15

Actually I have a trued 700 action on a 28 “ Bartlein barrel, with a timney trigger sitting in the corner........went to Borden’s in my benchrest rifles....just sitting there
Hi Don,
Can you tell us how much, a WINNING, BR Rifle, costs ??
Sounds like,.. you HAVE one !

Sounds like a good choice. A used benchrest rifle with a custom action is about $1500 - $2500. We can call then shot out, but as a new guy, I’ll bet they won’t hold you back for a while. A Hall or Stolle action should be good for a while.

Actions like the Origin are quite popular, but are really a hunting action. I would guess you want a Hall, Havenkamp, BAT, etc. Glue in’s are usually best with a hanger.
