Remington 700 switch barrel project

I have a sporter 270 Remington ADL that I would like to convert to a varminter for the spring and summer, then convert back to 270 for the big game hunting season.

Is this something that a do-it-yourselfer can do at home with the proper tools?

Thanks.

Before changing the bbl I would try using precision reloading techniques and 90 to 115 gr bullets in your .270. You might be surprised at the accuracy and ballistics.

To answer your question, Yes. You will need a barrel vise, action wrench, and lug alignment tool. I recommend head space gauge's for the cal's that you have and you check after each barrel installation. You may need a heat gun to remove the original barrel as rem uses lock-tight on the threads.

Once a barrel has been set up perfectly on a receiver you no longer need any gauges, just screw the barrel on tight and get to shooting... They don't ever chance once they have been head spaced for a particular action...

buckbrush: As always, "preacher" is right! A simple procedure that I always wanted to do, but kept putting off since I thought I'd screwup and damage one of my Rem. 700's. Have 4 now, and swap barrels without giving it a second thought. Get a good barrel vice, rear entry action wrench, I use the Kleindorst recoil lug tool/fixture, you'll need a good torque wrench ( bought a used 200 ft # Snap-on from a retired auto mechanic), a tiny bit of anti-sieze qpplied to the threads, etc. etc. I have a series of step-by-step digital pics loaded and could forward them to you if interested. e-mail fdshuster@hotmail.com

I agree with everyone that is saying a switch barrel is the way to go, but have one thing to add. I have a barrel vise that slides into the receiver hitch of my truck and I can change barrels at a match in about 8 minutes, this would work in the field if you were shooting prairie dogs and they started to get further out, just screw on a barrel that is better matched to the range.

buckbrush: E-mail w/ pics sent, notified by "postmaster" there is a "delayed delivery", ( since 9am 5-8-10,Saturday), PM also sent. Problem with your e-mail?
