Remington 700 SA Rebarrel Project

Gday everyone,

I've been lurking around the forums for some time now while deciding whether to join or not. My conclusion is that this is the best forum for discussing reloading and precision rifles. So many forums are just full of bad advice. AccurateShooter ticks all the boxes I was looking for!

I have been running a Rem700 SA in 6xc for about 1200 rounds. It has been used for the NRA style High Power matches out to 600 yards, some tactical rifle competition out to 800 yards and a bit of what we call spotlighting here in Australia - shooting feral pest animals such as pigs, goats, cats, dogs etc off the back of a truck at night. I've enjoyed the rifle and had a ton of fun with it but as the barrel heads towards it's last bulk pack of projectiles I have to acknowledge the difficulties I have experienced with the 6xc. My initial brass was fireformed Lapua 22/250 and it all developed a significant donut on the first firing. The reamer was allegedly the specs as designed by David Tubb however it turns out that wasn't the case - the freebore whilst sufficient to seat a 107gr SMK above the donut would not permit me to load the 87gr Hornady V-max without hitting the donut. These were my preferred (and available) hunting bullets. To get around that I fireformed some Winchester 22/250 brass and it did not form a donut but it had significant neck variation and I didn't want to get into turning necks. The reamer I have also had a .272" neck which is really a bit tighter than I'd prefer and that has resulted in some of its own problems. I tried Norma brass but it was a tight fit in the chamber as it seems to be based of a .308 case and not a .22/250. Anyway - it has been a hassle.

I am now at a place where I am considering if the 6xc is just a little too difficult for a bloke living in a country where gunsmiths and gunsmithing tools are few and far between. If I rebarrel with another 6xc I'll have to obtain another reamer with more neck clearance and freebore and that will be at significant cost.

I'm wondering if I would be better of just going with a 6.5 Creedmoor. I can borrow a reamer that has a .295 NK and 0.188 freebore. I just can't work out if that will allow me to magazine feed a 140 to 147 grain bullet (from an AI magazine) and get close to the lands in a Remington 700SA.

I really just want to spend more time shooting and less time messing around trying to resolve problems. Sorry my post was so long - just wanted to provide the relevant background. What does everyone think is my best option?

One way to manage the doughnut is before sizing a fired case run a chucking reamer into the neck. I have them +.001" and .002" over nominal bullet diameter. They aren't expensive. I run them at slow speed in my lathe and hold the case in my hand. Saved my butt several times.
I like fast 6's for varmint hunting but nothing wrong with a 6.5 and light bullets either. My favorite is a 243 Ackley Improved.

Don't worry about a significant jump with any caliber i have found most VLD style bullets like a .050 jump or more. Don't be afraid to seat out of donut and have a jump to the lands.

I mostly shoot 6XC and 260 rem, try and form some cases from 6.5 hornady brass to 6XC you will find it a surprise how easy it is. You will need to trim a little off the end tho. see if that doesn't solved your fire-forming issues with the 22-250 brass. But i was able to push back the shoulder in a 6XC non-bushing die in one pass and expand with a mandrel and trim.

**6 Creedmoor brass will work as well**

Given the limited access to gunsmiths, you may want to look at a remage setup. While you would not be able to pick the reamer, you can have your pick on cartridge and easily swap to something else if you don't like it. After you get the kit the cost pretty much ends up being 2 for one on pre-fit barrels vs. buying blanks and having to get them spun up.

Caliber wise, again if you are trying to avoid the gunsmith, a 308 is extremely accurate in the ranges you are shooting and will outlast everything else. Obviously the price is the recoil. 6.5 Creedmoor, 6 Creedmoor, 6XC, ...the new 6GT, so many good cartridges, and as @eric32 basically said, bullets are better these days. I think it is more about recoil, barrel life, component availability, and if/how much you want to fuss with something.

Thanks for the suggestion. Would that work in a drill press or only a lathe?

I hate a mate who shoots 6.5 Creedmoor and will grab some fired cases off him and give it a go. 6mm Creedmoor is scarce as hen's teeth in Australia. Thanks for another good idea.

yea i havent been able to get to the range with my re-formed brass, its all loaded up with 38gr of H4350 and a 115 dtac if it shoots well and is consistent i am selling all my norma brass,

I don't think the remage setup is available here I'll make some inquiries and find out.

I have a couple of decades experience with the 308 and while I still have a fondness for it once you have shot the 6 or 6.5 mm at long-range you realise just how much you are giving up by using a 30 cal. I have shot my 6xc and my 308 on the same day at 600 yards in the same condition and the extra wind drift of the 308 was quite frankly unbelievable. Can't argue with the barrel life though. Nothing beats it

if you already have everything and its just the brass giving you the issues then it's alot easier to change the brass, but 6.5 creed has it advantageous when factory ammo is avaiable and you dont want to load. Thats why i have a AIAT one screw and a barrel swap.
