Remington 700 bolt handle welding

There is a difference between improving extraction timing and optimizing it. One can be done without the action, the other can not. The functional difference between improved and optimized is nothing.

Butch, if you have the action in hand you can set it up to get almost 100% of the extraction available. I have never tried to get every bit, but getting about .100" of actual reward cam is typical. Now, if you did not get every little bit of cam possible, say you ended up with .070" of cam. Thats still enough to do the job. What I am saying is if you have enough primary extraction to break the case free from the chamber, more cam is not going to do anything for you. Theres a difference, but the end user wont know it unless he just needs things "perfect"

I did one yesterday, RR with stock handle, ended up with .095" reward travel on the cam. I have to do another soon. I may try to get every thing just to see, but its pointless really. Note: I dont offer this as a service, I do it only on complete builds I am working on.

I just did another and for the hell of it tried to get every little bit. .106" of rearward cam. I would say that is as much as you will get from a 700 and more than you need.

how much fore and aft clearance in the bolt cutout with the .106 rearward cam??? also are the lugs all the way off the closing cams on the lug abutments??

The measurements are taken with the bolt closed all the way and lugs against the abutments, VS the bolt open all the way held forward against the cam. Stripped bolt. I need to measure, but the for and aft slop in the bolt while closed is less than .010". More importantly is the handles relationship to the cam.

Unless your bolt is already timed perfectly, than any smiith will need the action to time the bolt before securing it. --Jerry

OFTEN wondered how this could be accomplished without the action.i set mine up at .004 with a feeler gauge.

Nice example Gene. I made a fixture that screws into the rear bridge scope mount screw holes that works pretty well to measure extraction and pin fall. Your system took a LOT less time than mine did.

The guy asked a simple question that turned into a two insult fest! All of you experts would really trip out if you knew of the really old school gunsmith that I know that builds winning long range rifles and you will not find a dial indicator in his shop. I don't pretend to be an expert by any means however I do believe there are various ways to get to where we are trying to get and differing ideas of achieving favorable results. So to the original question "brad6ppc" all of these guys are good at what they do and all have built outstanding rifles and I would venture to bet that all have produced a lemon. The best advice is choose wisely by the one that you believe favorable and you stand a very good chance of getting the results you are after.
