Remington 700 BDL to single shot question

I have a custom build Rem 700 BDL clone in a Bell and Carlson tactical stock. I only use the rifle as a single shot one, never using the magazine. A while back, I put a single shot follower on the rifle, to make it easier to load single shot. I simply placed the single shot follower on top of the magazine spring and it has worked great.

I would like to put this action and barrel assembly into a Benchrest single shot stock. I’m not sure what I should do about the follower though. The one I have is sold everywhere and appears to be made out of aluminum. My concern is, if I glue the follower in place permanently and it wears down, how will I replace it easily? Is there one someplace that is made of steel, or something a bit more stout than this soft aluminum? Or, how can I mount the aluminum follower in the action, so that I can easily get it back out, if it’s permanently mounted wears down?

Thanks so much for any info you might be able to offer.

I have done exactly what you desire, with Okie ingenuity.
I dropped my Rem 700 ADL into an old 40x single shot walnut stock.
I was in a hurry to get even a temporary solution, and took a slice of bamboo flooring and cut it to fit in the space required, with the desired shape for single shot function. I didn't use any permanent retention, just a close fit, and it actually moves around a little.
That's been seven or eight years ago, and thousands of rounds. jd

I had a single shot follower in a 40X for several years. A little release agent on the follorer. I put a dab of bedding compound in the stock. Fastened the action and stock together. When I pulled the action out of the stock the follower layed in the bedding compound. This was a ST1000 Shehane Tracker stock.

The "soft" aluminum follower will without a doubt will last longer than the barrel. When it is time for a barrel it will be out of the stock and changing it will be no big deal glued or not. Shoot, have fun, worry about the little stuff when it is an issue not before. If you decide to glue it in a good heat gun will soften it up so it can be removed easy.

Zack at Old Dominion Custom Rifles custom fit a follower to fit my Bighorn TL2 making a smooth bottom to the receiver versus gluing it to the bedding.

Only needs a couple drops of JB in two or three places to hold it. The stock/bedding will hold it in. PTG makes one contoured to match the action radius. Davidson makes one with a flat bottom on outside.

I'd hate to see what my aluminum action would look like if you ever wore out an aluminum SS loading ramp!

I'd been looking at one that "Ragged Hole" was sposed to have, but couldn't find it on their site. This ones a done deal now. Thanks again. jd
