How tight do the two screws need to be ? Is hand tight good enough ?

Much depends upon the stock and the material it's made of.

H.S. recommends 65 inch pounds. I assume that's no bedding, action seated on the bare bedding block.

Hs stocks have an aluminum bedding block built in. Pillar bedding it is a huge waste since it already has essentially pillars the size of half the stock. 65 in lbs is correct on an hs stock bedded or bare block

And if you don't have a torque driver, 65 inch pounds is freakin tight. jd

Don't forget that torque #s are for lubed threads .

I have used 45 front and 30 rear for years and it has worked very well for me. If using 60 and 60 your bedding had better be perfect or you will torque the receiver. Really not that hard to do in my experience. Good luck.

I just recently became the owner of a Wheeler "Fat Wrench". I have large strong "working hands", that get used pretty rough everyday.

Even still I was pretty shocked to find out just how tight 45 inch pounds was. (which is where I've set my action screws) To set at 65 lbs, you'd better have very good fitting slotted drivers, or preferably torque heads.

I've been shooting "under-torqued" all my life I guess. jd

Now I'm worried ,my stock is a HS Precision and has been glass bedded and is pillar bedded . So if I torqued the receiver it will show on the target.

If you try different torque settings and get improved accuracy just run with it. Doubtful that the receiver is bent, probably just bowed.

Shot it yesterday with 65lbs of torque and the rifle shot great !
