Remington 700 7mm Rem Mag police model

I just bought a Remington 700 7mm Rem Mag police model from a buddy of mine who bought it and didn’t shoot it. Doing a little research I found they were only made for about two years. Very low round count rifle. Sighted in using some older Winchester 150gr ammo shoots about 1 moa at 100 yards. I plan on hunting and doing some 1000 yard target practice with this rifle. Currently I have some Peterson brass, Wolf magnum primers, 162gr eld m and Retumbo powder. Wanting to try 175-180gr but not 100% they will stabilize in this rilfe. Found some Berger 168gr VLD hunting bullets to try as well. Any tips ?

I looked at Hodgdon load data and saw very few loads for 7mmRM with retumbo it may be too slow, then again maybe you have something figured out that others din't. I think that H4831 may be closer to what most use. The black things in the back ground ranchers get pissed if you shoot birds off of their backs, if you have to do it not while they are looking.

I use retumbo in a 7mmRUM and found out that many are using it in 25 06. Ive always used H4831 in my 25 06, I will try out the retumbo next time I load some of the 25 06s. It may be way more versatile than i think. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

4831 and 4350 are my go to powders for 7mm rem mag in that bullet weight range

If your rifle will stabilize 175-180gr bullets Retumbo works well as that's what I use in mine with a 26" barrel, 175 gr Hornady ELD-X and 180gr Berger Hybrid, H1000 also works well.
Lighter bullets I'd use 4831 like others have mentioned.

In that exact same rifle, work up to 71g of Retumbo, fed 215,160-168g, and seating depth is going to be one of the things to deal with on your tune. Start at 69.7g and work up in .3g increments. You will hit major pay dirt somewhere at or prior to hitting 71g, and I am using Remington brass for case volume reference.

Make sure that the mag box free floats between the floor plate and the action.

The Berger 168g Classic Hunter is an easy bullet to tune.

Be darn sure to keep the copper out of the barrel, if you do not have a bore scope, they are a good investment. De copper every 20 rounds or so.

I put a Gentry muzzle break on my rifle to keep down the recoil, throws much of the concussion forward. The Muzzle break with the concussion thrown forwards, make the rifle a pleasure to shoot.

In my opinion, the 175g LRAB is worth building a rifle around. 2850 fps with R#22 with cci 250 and 3030 fps with R#26(215's) in my 7 mags. The 175g LRAB clobbers what ever it hits, in spades. You get great expansion, PLUS fantastic penetration. In my rifle, they like to be seated very close to the lands, barely off...so did the 168g LRAB.

I have a 700P also. 308. Quite accurate but this one does NOT like a cool barrel. Needs 3 or 4 down the barrel and then it becomes really accurate.
Certainly a big minus if I were to hunt.

Magpro has been available on several sites and I have seen it in stores, very versatile bullet weight wise in the 7rem mag. The 150 and 168 Berger classic hunter are a very good bullets. Also the 175 grand slam would be a heavy that will still work if you got one of the Rem 1/9.25 twist barrels.

You know i hate you sometimes with your good ideas. I bet everyone of my bdl style internal magazine's touch the action. Now how do you suppose i fix this

You have two ways to fix this issue, but first I put a radius on the outside edge of the mag box Which will allow the mag box to slide in the inside lip of the floor plate. Put a radius on the inside lip of the floor plate also, especially the corners.

Often, a washer between the floor plate and the stock will fix the issue of the mag box not floating between the floor plate and the action.

More often than not, the bottom of the mag box is filed off or sanded off reducing the height of the mag box. Rubbing the bottom of the mag box on a mill file works well, or using some kind of Sander.

I use a 36 grit metal sanding belt, bdl mag box are hard to find. But adl are at most gunsmiths and only need to be shortened to work with bdl bottom medal. ( a radius on the top is a good idea).

It can touch you just need to be able to reach in and wiggle it a bit
