Remington 700 338 LM action

carlsbad

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
The Remington 700 action in 338 LM is sometimes controversial as some consider it underdesigned for the large cartridge.

Does anyone know if there is any difference in the metallurgy of the receiver between the standard 30-06 action and the 338LM action?

thanks,
Jerry

The issue is the 3 rings of steel concerning the bolt nose-
hence the pinned m16 extractor that is installed for the Lapua L/A 700's.

You're the supposed nuclear engineer-
break out the Rockwell tester & get back w/us.

A few years back there was a video Super slow motion of a Remington 700 chambered in 338 LP magnum. It was amazing to see the action flex and whip when being fired. I have had people send me their actions after shooting the 338 LP Magnum and the scope base screws were sheered off. And others with the bolt lug were warped. I don't recommend this cartridge for the Remington 700 action and will not chamber one.

Same here. I flat refuse to. I tell the customer we can use an aftermarket action.

Yes, that's the controversy I referenced. Nobody seems to know the answer to this question.

Not trying to argue for the action but I'll point out a fact: Be careful about the slow motion photography showing bending. A slowed down video of a golf swing is likely to show the shaft bending at an impossible bow because the shutter sweeps across the field and a moving object is transferred into a curved object by the sweep during motion.

Here is a video. LINK

I've been truing up 700 for more than 3 decades. A standard .532" magnum will displace metal in the action lug area. I've seen metal moved from the lug area to the bore of the action to the point of reducing the diameter. That can't be a safe and sound engineering practice. I've shot my single digit serial number BAT M so much that it has moved metal in the action. Not much but it's changed.
As far as your question about heat treating being different. Probably not. Remington is not that smart. Heat treating would only help the daily abuse to a point, not the structural integrity unless a different type of steel was used. Even then it's a marginal gain in strength.
Size does matter in this case.

Although I agree with Jim's desire to be conservative, his calculations are incorrect. Standard hoop stress calculations (used for pipe) are not applicable to heavy walled cylinders (gun barrels or chambers). You have to use Lame's 3-dimensional equations to calculate the stresses, which vary from inside to outside. There is a stress profile, not a stress number. I suspect Jim has used the simple hoop stress formula for pipe which will yield incorrect results.

Here is a thread that I did some calculations using Lame's equations to satisfy myself that things were safe.

I love Borden actions and borden bumps. And his error is conservative, which is how we always want to keep our errors.

You do know who Jim Borden is, don't you, Jerry?

You can. Go to your OP. Click on "thread tools." A drop down menu will appear with the option to delete the thread. At least it does in the Classifieds.

What did Savage do on their .338 Lapua rifles? Are they on a bigger action and barrel tennon ? I know it is heavier than a hunting rifle . Just wandering .
