Remington 540XR compatibility with others (stocks)

I have picked a very nice 540 XR. It is a heavy barrel, single shot. I need a stock for it and was wondering if there are any stocks that would be compatible with the factory inlet. The factory stock appears to be a very simple inlet. I looked at Richards site and a 581 single shot looks like it might be close, but for the money, I want it to fit. I have noticed some posts about Anschutz, but don't know anything about them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The 581 was a magazine version, the 580 was the single shot version. The receivers are the same but barrel diameters are different. Anschutz inlets are not even remotely close.
Another option is the 540X stock which was the military trainer stock.

The 540x / xr are single shot
The 541x is the military target /trainer , repeater , magazine
580 , single shot
581 repeater , magazine
582 , tube feed
541 , repeater , magazine

The 540x/xr has two action screws and the others all ( I believe ? ) have one
I thought Richards microfit offered the 540x/xr inlet at one time but do not see it now , you could ask

What are you wanting or wanting to do , what stock do you have now ?

The stock I have is a factory stock, but it has been cut up for a left handed shooter. Holes have been cut in the forearm to help make a weight limit. Just looking for a nice stock for it. I will check with Richard's.

Tried Richard's and even set pics of my inlet on my old stock with out any luck. The 580 should work if it is a 2 screw action. The lady I spoke with said a short action single shot would not work, I tried to explain that it was a 22 single shot with no luck.

Troupe - I'm with you needing a stock. My 540XR is from a previous owner on the forum. It shoots nice but the stock is oil soaked in the action area. Anyway, there must be a way to replace these stocks. I'm going to look up Boyd's and see if they have anything. I guess that if a 541 stock can be found, the magazine opening can be filled in. If you find anything, let us know.

I am not a stock maker, but this looks to be the simplest inlet that could be done. I looks like if someone had the right sized router, a couple of passes and it would be done on the inlet. I could do the rest with a dremel.

The dremel is why I am not a stock maker. From a earlier post, the Rem. 580 may work if it is a two action screw is comparable. I measured the best I could with calipers and it appears to be between 2.700 to 2.750 range. A couple of pillars would be nice also.

Thanks for the reply 68Hoyt, just wondering if I could find a stock listed for the 580 that you mentioned would be the same inlet as the 540XR. I have tried Richard's for some help, even sent photos with no response. If I could get the inlet done, I would have a couple of walnut boards glued together for a nice stock. Just a poor cop trying to get something on the cheap for a nice little action. Who knows, the rifle may not even shoot, but it would shoot better with a stock.

Thanks for the help,

Tom

Tom - Are the 541 stocks out of the question? I'm not sure but I think some time back Boyd's stocks had some 541 inlets. Like I said, I'm not sure so don't hold my feet to the fire. I think there was a 541 on eBay as well. With the 541 stock seems like all you'd have to do is fill the mag well with a walnut block cut and sanded to fit, and then redrill the action screw holes where necessary. Maybe some of our fellow 540 shooters would know for sure. I'm hoping we can find a way to solve this problem.

Thank you Jim for the reply. I don't want to spend the money on a stock that I will have to modify to work. If it comes down to do any mods, I will glue some wood on my factory stock and attempt to make it work. I will check with Boyd's and see what they may have. Not giving up yet.

This is the best forum going and something will work out.

Fill the holes in the original stock and paint it, that gives you a choice of a paint scheme from mild to wild.
I started painting old beat up stocks many years ago - you will be surprised at how nice one can be made to look.

Holes would be the easy part, but wood has been removed on the forearm. Enough that epoxy would not work. If I don't find something, I will work on it for sure.

Don Stith's website says he makes a benchrest stock for the 540x and it would be for a single shot if it for BR. I don't know if anything I read is current but it said $200-250. might be worth a call. Nice guy that does good work, if he is still doing stocks.

540x/xr in 541x , note the the second action screw is not used , modifications would be necessary to do this . [
