Remington 540X Target

I picked up one of these a while back and haven't even had a chance to shoot it yet.
Anybody familiar or have comments about these?
Thanks

Have had one and it was a great rifle. Very accurate and with a wide range of ammunitions... Sold it as my tastes went German...

The 540x and 541t are excellent rifles. I have a small problem with them. I would start with eley yellow box, and then try federal match if you can fine either you will have a good starting point.

What do you want to know about the rifles?

Just experiences and opinions anyone has had good or bad and opinions on ammo that
is likely to shoot well.
I Thank you and DBerry for your thoughts on ammo.
Always like to hear from anyone in North Dakota Too as that is where my Dads side of
the family is from and Bismarck is where I went to first grade.

Couole things that may help, torque on the action screws plans a big roll for my rifles.

Usually more torque of the front screw and slowly increase the torque on the rear while shooting groups. Good way to tune.

788 triggers fit the 540x and can be adjusted if your rifle doesn't have an adjustable trigger.

Good luck and have fun.

SK Standard Plus Then Lapua CenterX as well as Midas. Many other do shoot good, just depends if you are having fun or matches.
788 Triggers being adjustable, you must mean aftermarket. Unless I'm getting cheated, None of my 788 triggers from the factory have ever been adjustable. First thing I do is go to the trigger

Thanks for tips!
I usually torque my rifle action screws on all of my rifles as you described for fine tuning
and I always find a sweet spot but hadn't yet done it on this 540x.
I usually start with 40 lbs in front and 10 in the back and go from there.
The trigger on this thing already feels sweet. 0 travel and breaks @ 1/2 lb.
My guess is it came from an estate auction.

Have been hearing a couple places that CCI Green Tags are doing pretty well
for cheap but good ammo.
Any opinions on them?

Gotta ask. What is the "small problem" you have with them if you would share?

I have two, one is like in brand new condition bore still original black.
The other I refinished and ended up shortening the barrel since the muzzle end was considerably larger than the rest of the bore. Cut it back to behind the front sight screws and re crowned it.
Shoots really nice now. I use it in our monthly steel silhouette matches out to 200 meters.
Ammo is different , shoot SK match , loves rws 50, but it is expensive, you need to experiment.
Triggers can be adjusted below 1lb need to be careful!!!!

here is the result after the cutting the barrel.
