Remington 40X 22lr

How accurate are the 40x in 22lr? I have a W52-B and a 54 Super match Anschutz. Buy far the Anschutz is a better shooter but this 52-B shoot very good also. It is not as picky with ammo though. I have the chance to purchase one from a old friend. Will I be disappointed? nilebartram

Our Club shoots a 22 match (50 and 100 yards off the bench) each Thursday morning and have been doing this for 5+ years now. (That means we have shot somewhere around 250 matches.) The equipment creep is in full-on mode as is the ammo quality and testing. We have shooters using everything from the CMP Kimber 82G's to full custom built BR rifles. We don't see Winchester 52's very often and the 40X's beat them.

The 40X holds it's own with all of them, the winner being the one that the shooter/ammo can perform on any given day.

One thing we have found with the "older" guns is that freshening the crown on the barrels really helps. Also weight sorting your ammo with as scale that measures to .002 grain keeps those oh sh*t low shots from ruining your scores.

3 years ago I owned a 1965 40X and a CMP Kimber 82G. But I had always heard how good an Anschutz 54 was. So I snagged a 1962 Match 54 on gunbroker. I tested it against the 82G because I felt it was the lesser of the 3 guns and even if it wasn't , I wouldn't get rid of my 40X. I tested it as received and then after I had pillar bedded it and replaced the firing pin spring and had the trigger reworked for 3 oz. The 82G wasn't even close. So then I tested in a benchrest match on the same day with the same ammo on 2 different times the 40X vs the 54. The 40X beat the 54 by score 499 vs 498 but not in X count. The 54 took it by almost 10-X's

I have never owned a Winchester 52 but I was allowed to put 20 rounds into an A23 target. Even with a post front sight I scored 200 but only about 10X. Since I had no previous track record to know the gun, to me at least, it shows it is pretty forgiving. My 40X with quality match sights has shot 200-20X once and a bunch of 18 and 19X's. I imagine the 52 could have come close if I had more time to understand it and had a true globe sight on it rather than a post. But I don't think it could have come as close as the 40X.

I know I haven't answered your question directly but these are my observations for what they are worth. And without doing a custom gun, I do feel that the Anschutz 54 will have better gun to gun accuracy than either the 40X or the 52. I am sorry to say but the German engineering for guns seems to be a cut above and you pay for it.

I think I was very blessed to get a good shooting 40X. As previously noted I had to straighten up the crown. While it shot pretty good I noticed that the end of the barrel was not perpendicular to the bore. When I put an 11 degree crown on it sure enough you could see that it was out every so slightly. It just shot better afterwards.

If the price is right, I don't see how you can go wrong. I don't have, nor have I shot a 40X, but I have the older model that it was based on, the 37. Even with a trigger measured in pounds I can repeat 1/2 MOA at 50 with cheap ammo like Geco rifle, SK Standard Plus, and Norma Tac-22. I'm not a bench rest competitor so I just shoot for fun. In general the Remmingtons from that era are superb if the bore is still in good condition.

I think that you will be extremely disappointed!!! Don't do it you will never be the same!!! OOOOOO, can I have your "old friends" number to tell him/her how they need to sell it to me...of course, I would only do that out of courtesy and for saving you from a horrible mistake!!! I own two of them and another would fit right in... yeh...um...I saved two other people from making a horrible mistake...yeah...that's my story!!!!

you are joking, of course? Are telling me they are more accurate than the 54?

Don't ever pass on a older 40x rim-fire if in nice condition
They can shoot with any factory rim-fire.
Got this one in wood stock it shot okay but when I put it in a Robertson stock and bedded it and change trigger to a Jewel it shot 50% smaller groups. likes Lapua Midas + the best

I had a Anshutz 54 Super Match, Super Accurate Rifle. My shooting buddy has a 40X and I would not hesitate to get one especially at a good price. Very accurate and nice feeling rifles. I really like the Anschutz better but would take either one of them. I think the Anschutz is a nicer looking rifle but as far as accuracy I can't tell a bit of difference. Buy it, you can never have too many rifles.

I have 3 stocks for this 40X. International free rifle, factory walnut and a fiberglass Mcmillam. Gonna sell the international, too heavy. I put pillars in the wood one, got to bed it. The fiberglass needs to be bedded. So you think the fiberglass one will shoot better? Thanks for the reply, nilebartram

You might be surprised that it will shoot well in either stock. I put pillars in my 37 and that was all it took to make it settle down. Before you do anything to either stock, shoot them with a few types of ammo. Then you have something to compare the modifications to. Who knows, they may shoot well enough to run as is.

nilebartram,
Personally, I believe you'd be hard presses to find a rifle better shooting than an Anschutz. But if you are that much into rimfire, then a 40X would be an added welcome. And I'm no expert at "bedding", but I can tell you from my experiencing Anschutz, I never did bed my rifle and it outshot a number of other Anschutz (bedded) as well as other top brand actioned rifles. And that was based upon extensive testing to find the rimfire ammo she liked the best. And in rimfire, the ammunition you shoot is the probably the most critical factor in accuracy due to matching the rifle with the ammo they like/shoot the best. So do not discount the ammo you use just because it may be named something someone uses that works in Their rifle.

Does anyone know how many of these were made? There were something like 140,000 Winchester 52’s made over 60 years, but these seem much harder to find.
