Remage Barrels with Nut

Recently put a Criterion remage barrel on an older remington 700 (mid seventies vintage). Just got it broke in and the results have been quite good. Need to do some load development for sure. I put it in a magpul hunter 700 stock and it looks slick. The caliber is 22-250, and my thinking is with a barrel burning caliber, I can swap out the barrel for a "reasonable" cost once it's shot out. I like to shoot, so it will get shot out eventually. For a factory rifle the barrel nut system seems to be a nice alternative for someone who needs to change out a barrel but doesn't want the wait or expense of having a gunsmith doing it.

A shouldered barrel is easier on all accounts. While a nut does just knock loose and unscrews a shouldered barrel just unscrews (and goes back to the same spot blindfolded). Lots of br competitors have their barrels fitted hand tight so they can swap them without any tools
Okay I'm trying to get this straight in my pea brain, so the shouldered barrel are timed to screw up tight with right amount of head space and drop into the locking lug slot in stock?

I have an older 700 that I would like to put a barrel on and was looking at the Ramage system. While I really like my Pac-Nor's I don't want the four + months wait. How did you go about timing the barrel for correct headspace and get the lug to drop in perfect? Maybe I can u-tube this?

Yea, but a shouldered barrel has to be set up by a gunsmith. Once it’s set up you can remove and install all you want as long as you don’t change anything with the recoil lug or bolt. With a nut, you can install and headspace your own barrel.

You will need a Go headspace gauge to set headspace.

For the recoil lug Northland Shooters Supply now offers their action wrench with a 3rd member that indexes and fixtures the recoil lug so that it does not rotate when tightening the nut.

The other option for the lug is to pin it to the receiver. The NSS lug comes with a pin (SHCS) and you can notch the receiver face or remove it and drill receiver for dowel pin.

Looking to do my 700 action, looks like a interesting concept. Let me no how you like yours. Thanks Gary

Had my 700 done by Tim Smith & John Armstrong with the remage. .308 with Criterion 1/10 barrel. Shoots lights out. One hole at 100 with 195 SMKT. She goes to 1800 with 175 SMK.

My intension is to copy what you did, what recipe did your barrel like the best?

A high quality prefit barrel is in the range of $350 chambered, threaded, contoured, crowned and delivered.

Please do tell...Where are you getting a, "quality" finished barrel for $350? My last pre-fit was a 22 Creedmoor with a SS Super Match barrel from Pac Nor. I thought I had gotten a good deal at just under $600, shipped.

My last 2 barrels from Pac Nor have taken 2 months each. However, I have waited 3 months before. I try to have my re-barreling done in the summer time. Seems they are faster that time of the year. Probably because most guys are already out shooting their, "early in the year builds".

Call Jim at Northland Shooters Supply. Criterion barrels are great but he also offers Shilen. 24-26" Stainless Match $300 plus shipping

Thank you my friend. I will do that, as I'm looking at a REM 700 action that is just begging for a 30 BR barrel!

I I bought a Criterion 6br and the first time I ever shot F class I took second place out of 12 guys (1000 yards). Criterion also takes 2 to 3 months to provide a buildo order prefit. Jim at Northland Shooters Supply stocks some common chamberings. They have a fair variety of and reamers on hand if you want to supply your own reamer you can for a $50 set up fee

It is worth the wait for sure, they are busy ,which is a good thing. I can't wait on this build so I might try a different approach

A shouldered barrel is quicker and easier to swap out with another shouldered barrel that happens to be fitted to that action. Of course the appeal with the nut system is not how fast you can change barrels. The attractions to a prefit is price/performance, flexibility and resale value. With a shouldered barrel you're typically $600 to $700 after gunsmithing and shipping costs.

Since a prefit will fit a huge number of other actions on the market without modification the resale market is excellent. Not so much for a shouldered barrel.

I would expect in general a shouldered barrel done by an expert gunsmith doing the work properly might outperform a prefit for accuracy but there are just way too many instances where prefits shoot right with the best of them.
EXACTLY , plus, you can have two prefit Bbl's. for the total cost of a gunsmith built shouldered barrel fitted to your action.Plus with the Remage system, get another bolt for the other case head ; ie, have a 308 size bolt, get on bolt for a 223 size case and your choices are only limited the the number of barrels "T.O.W.M.B.O." will let you buy.:D

I got my barrel from Northland Shooters supply and it took about a week, they had it on the shelf. Used a go-gage that I got from them also. Installation was just like a savage which is not difficult, especially if you have the correct tools. Not trying to promote anybody here, but I will say this barrel is very nice and cleans up very easily. Time will tell, but so far I’ve been pleased with the results. One thing I do like about the barrel nut option is you get many chances at getting the headspace correct. I’m not saying it took me multiple tries, but I did set the headspace tight (less than a thousands from sammi spec) so not to stretch new brass that is sized to sammi spec when fire forming. The people at NSS were very helpful and made sure I had everything I would need to get going. Hope I helped you out. Almost forgot, recoil lug, I centered it with the action wrench and some wedging. I didn’t have the wrench attachment mentioned in another post that does it for you.

Muleman, Some of the action wrenches have a slot cut out to correctly place the recoil lug. I prefer to have a pinned recoil lug. Once you get the head space correct you can locktite the barrel nut to the barrel and never need to you the head space gauge to swap out barrels.

Thank you, very helpful to say the least. How tight was your space, I want to do the same?
