REM/AGE ?

Link

I did a search and found a 2 year old post, what's new? I have a rx1 700 30 br that I will replace the barrel. Who makes the best REM/AGE for it?
TYIA. Don

Lots of remage barrels out there by all the major barrel makers. Problem you will have is finding one chambered for 30br. If you have to have the barrel chambered you might as well go with a standard shouldered barrel.

We know the allure of the remage is the cost. Someone has to chamber it. How does it cost 1/2 as much as a standard shoulder? Or ''do you get what you pay for'', come into play here.

Most of the time the prefit barrels are made from cheaper blanks and prepped if not chambered on a cnc. Thats where the savings come in so yes you get what you pay for save some exceptions i guess

A number of respected barrel makers including Criterion, Shilen, Benchmark. Pac Nor offer prefit barrels. I think if you can trust them to bore a proper barrel, then chambering is no more challenge. Shooting local Fclass none shoot any better at 300yd than the Criterions, and longer range performance falls off a bit due to much less shooter experience. Maybe not dead nuts benchrest quality.

Bugholes.com makes prefits from Bartlein blanks.

Hand chambered, etc etc

Lots of people are hand chambering prefits now. Not new news. Except to people that are stuck in 2008.
Why the snotty response? My question to Dusty was in regard to his statement that lower quality barrels were being used in prefits.

:cool:Tommie, it's common knowledge among shooters who have been using prefit/drop in barrels. They can be had for less than $200 to $515. With that range of price spread there has to be a range of quality. As far as I know, the only high end barrel maker offering a prefit is Krieger, selling for $515(correct Me if I'm wrong). There are some $350 barrels that are well made and winning matches. Even the $200 offerings are better shooters than almost any stock/factory barrel. There "are"some Savage Factory rifle shooters winning matches.

In general, the seller can't get as much money for a prefit, no matter the quality of the barrel blank. There are several reasons for this. How many chambers were cut with the reamer that chambered Your barrel? The tendon threads were cut to a stock dimension, not matched to Your action. It likely won't be from a top quality barrel blank. This being said, there are many prefits out there that shoot very well.

If You are interested in competive match winning accuracy, You should purchase the top quality blank of Your choice($350/$400?),send it and Your action to the top rated Smith of Your choice($350/$400?), and have him do the work. And while Your at it, You should have Your own reamer, You will need it again sooner than You think.

This is My opinion, based on My experience with prefits, despite My limited knowledge of precision shooting. Good Luck

For me, it's the ease of changing barrels. Cost isn't really a whole lot less that having a blank chambered and fitted. Though assuming you buy a chambered pre-fit, it does do away for the wait for the smith to fit and chamber.

I agree with this. I’ve also found no down side to a barrel nut other than aesthetics. I have some shouldered savages and some nutted Remingtons. It’s simply not a determining factor in how a gun shoots.

I have just never been a Savage fan (and I realize I might not know what I am missing out on). Therefore the Savage barrel nut also looks unattractive to me. And everyone has their own idea of beauty.

But I am a fan of a prefit using a quality barrel (the same I would choose for a shouldered barrel) using a bugnut!

I have premium prefits. I have shot them. Unless you are planning on going the Nationals and shoot for top ten, a good prefit made from a premium blank made by a reputable gunsmith will shoot better than you can shoot.

In the words from the TV show, "The guns of Will Sonnet" "No brag, just fact"
No matter if you spend $ 250.00, $ 400.00 $ 700.00 for a per fit, or $ 1000.00 for a "Smith" to chamber a BBl. to your action,
It's the MASTER TRIGGER LINKAGE that makes the greatest difference

A fellow shooter who uses Criterion barrels in 6.5 Lapua on a Savage action regularly dusts guys with much more costly rifles. His rifle doesn't seem to handicap him at Mid Range or Long Range F-Class
