Rem/Age Barrel, your first hand thoughts

I really like the end result. Having a Savage like rifle that uses Remington components is a real plus. I think the barrel nut is a bit ugly but doing the work myself is a lot of fun. I started with a Remington 700 ADL, removed the barrel and installed the Rem/Age setup with little effort. I had to modify the stock to allow clearance for the nut. Otherwise, the rifle is as it was when I bought it.
You need a set of Go/No-Go gauges in the new caliber, an action wrench and a barrel nut wrench. Breaking loose the original barrel from the action was a bit difficult but nothing that a pipe wrench and some Kroil couldn't handle. The original barrel is a tomato stake so scarring it with a pipe wrench was no loss.
Some people will say that you only need a factory fresh cartridge or, at most, a Go gauge and some tape. I prefer the real deal so spent the extra money for the Go gauge and the No-Go gauge.

He had to. I looked at mine and that's the only way it's going is to trim the entire stock with a Dremel. Not too bad.
I also talked to another person who PM'd me, he has about 5 of the Rem-age's and loves them, he just wanted to keep it a secret.
I would be nice to see pictures if someone has some.

I will say I think a lot of general shooters are skeptical of the Savage / Rem/Age swap bbl. systems.
Based on your sales of Savage pre-fits, would it be economically feasible to find either a known, or "common Joe" shooter, {BR,F-Class} with a Rem. action, and supply him with a Rem/Age Bbl. Have him shoot three 5 shot groups, remove and then install the bbl. and repeat the same three 5 shot groups on the same three targets. Video enough to make an Advertizing video

I am considering one of these barrels too because I just can't fit in 600 dollars worth of gunsmithing fees to fit a new barrel on my Sendero action. I just wonder if a Savage done this way be more accurate because of the floating bolt head if neither the savage or the remington actions were "trued".
I'm sure the floating bolt head wouldn't hurt accuracy. I have a Criterion on a Savage and it shoots great. My buddy got a 7-08 rem age and he had his gunsmith cut the notch and install the barrel. The gunsmith wanted to do it without cutting the notch. We haven't shot it enough to know how good it's going to be yet.
what do yall think about welding the recoil lug to the action?
I have 3 Rem/Age barrels with Rock Creeks on the Remington actions and they shoot great, I mean reeeeeally great! They shoot just as well as a few of my custom actions. I can only imagine that gunsmiths hate them, they are very simple to put on and with the ability to take barrels on and off so easy I can have multi calibers for the same rifle, just a Go / No Go gage and your done!

I don't have a problem with a nut, I just don't know why you would want to do it if you didn't have to.
Maybe there is more to it but I guess the main reason Savage does it is to save time not cutting a tenon and shoulder. ???
I think it's easier/faster to switch out shouldered barrels.
Maybe I got it wrong. I just built my first Savage so I'm intrested in hearing your thoughts.

I don't like the looks of the nut but I like the nut because I can "fit" the barrel to my actions myself. When I wear out a barrel, or want to change caliber, I order a pre-fit barrel and headspace it myself. If I order a barrel blank, I have to pay a real gunsmith to fit and headspace the barrel. For a shooter, I am happy with the nut world. For a long range or bench rest gun, I always use a gunsmith and a quality barrel. I believe it is faster and easier to switch barrels with barrels that don't use the nut. The shoulder keeps the headspace consistent where I have to re-headspace the switch barrel with a nut on it. I have heard of someone who glues the nut in place after setting the headspace. That sort of works like a shouldered barrel.

What is the maximum outside diameter of the Rem and Savage barrel nuts?
What is the total overall length of these nuts?
Do these nuts make for a very thin spot on the stock?

I built a 7mm-08 with the Criterion Rem/Age, in stainless.
The results were awesome.
After lapping the lugs, break-in and tuning in my own loads - I have repeatable cloverleafs or two hole/three shot patterns, and any of that variation is me.
I am looking at doing another one.
Regarding the aestethic / cosmetics - its all preference.
I own Savages and Remingtons and I dont have a problem with either - they both look good.
