Rem/Age Barrel Question

I just received my 6mm Creedmor Barrel, barrel nut and recoil lug from NSS. Thanks, Jim - looks great!

The recoil lug has the pin, so the bottom of my Rem 700 action needs to be notched. Jim explained this to me when I placed my order.

My question...

Could I just order a different heavy duty recoil lug without the pin and use that instead? The action wrench has a slot to the hold the lug in place for assembly.

I'm not opposed to using a 'smith to notch the action, or trying myself. Just looking for another alternative.

Yes you can. However it's allot easier with it pinned or slotted to relocate the lug in the same place (for bedding purposes) when switching barrels.

Just order a un-notched lug and go at it or have the notch on the lug you have now milled flat. If your action wrench will align the recoil lug it's easy.

The lugs I've gotten from him in the past used small allen head screws that would just screw out, if you don't want to use the slot in the action face

I agree that you can certainly get by without the pin, but it sure is nice to have when swapping out barrels. I'd get a smith to drill or notch the receiver for it. It's a simple job if you have the right tooling and only needs to be done once.

How is it any different if his action wrench locates the lug upon install? There is no reason to notch the action then. That's like pinning a recoil lug when you have a recoil lug locating tool. It saves you a few seconds but nothing else.

Well, as I said, either way will work. But first, I've never seen a recoil lug alignment tool or wrench that didn't have enough clearance for the lug to can't a couple of degrees. That's not much but it may well be the difference between the lug bottoming out in the bedding under the lug, or not. That said, pinning isn't perfect either, but it's better in this regard, especially so if two pins are used.
Also, if pinned, the barrel can be removed without removing the barreled action from the stock.

To each, their own.

And to that I would have to say what is the difference in aligning the pin hole in the action if not perfectly in alignment with the vertical axis of the action and then having him remove his lug with a barrel change and then reversing it on re-installing the barrel? Unless it is PERFECT there will be some misalignment

That's correct...just don't reverse the lug. Better yet..leave it alone and pull the barrel without removing the stock. Of course this requires a barrel channel that allows it.
