title says it all . which would be the smart move for muleys and white tail 200yd to 400yd shots ?i am thinking 150gr bullets .but open for suggestions .thanks in advance. mike

I really like the 7 saum with 162 gr SST bullets and 4831sc. All the deer I have shot with it have dropped really quick including a few big ones. I have not used a .284.

I have only shot the 7saum. I had it built two years ago and shoot 180 berger VLD hunting bullets out it. I get 2860 with a 24 inch barrel. It has a brake and it is extremely accurate. With the brake I have three nieces that have shot cow elk between 410-729 yards, all one shot kills. I've filled two tags with it at long range, both animals didn't take a step. I think the .284 it pretty close to the same thing. I'm not pushing this rifle as far as loads go and would build another in a heartbeat, matter of a fact my brother built one identical last year because he liked this one so much. I bet you'll be happy with either one. Good luck.

How would you compare the 7 SAUM to the 280AI?

Out to 400 yards, this is splitting hairs. One does not have a measurable advantage over another at such short range. Run your anticipated mv's thru Mr. Litz's Applied Baĺistics online calculator, which also gives a HPS prediction and you will see that you are close to within a few percent or less. With all of the listed cartridges in the thread at present, it will be more the indian than the arrow that determines effectiveness.

I own one of each. I use the 7saum with the 180 Bergers and I love the rifle. It's easy to shoot, accurate and does its job very well. Everyone who shoots it loves it and its devastating on big game.

The 280 AI I have is a custom Jon Beanland built and it came out just like I hoped it would. I've only had it for half a year and I'm just getting to know it. I bought it simply because so many people love that caliber and a lot of guys I know use it. I decided I wanted one when my best friend was telling me that there is just something about it, its like it electrocutes what it hits. The rifle I own is accurate, well under a half inch. Other than that I don't know much. I'm sure there's lots of 280AI owners that could chime in. Not much help I'm afraid.

Just an observation, but I tend to keep and shoot rifles a long time. With that said, you know you can buy three or four different brands of 284 brass. RSAUM is a proprietary case/cartridge, and hard(er) to find. I have several wildcats, and the only way I would invest in a one brand cartridge case would be if I could buy a couple hundred of them before I got the rifle.

I would think the argument should take a different angle to the usual ballistics chat if it is a hunting rifle.
What sort of action will you use? A 284 might feed easier and with the narrower case you might be able to fit another round or two in the magazine.

Hello everyone. New guy here. I have some limited experience with the 7rsaum. I had a rifle built early this year and recently had the oppurtunity to shoot it out to 1k yds. It weighs 14-2 with scope and bipod and I don't think I would want it any lighter for what I built it for. Shooting 180 gr. Berger hybrids, the rifle would easily shoot .5 moa if I did my thing. At this point, brass is made by three companies. Remington, Norma and Nosler. I have only used Norma and it seems to be available at Bullets.com regularly(seems that Shiraz is a fan of the 7rsaum).It's all pricey but the Nosler is way up there. Also, you would be burning @ 20% more powder with no big advantage. IMHO, and for the purpose you stated the .284 may be a better choice for that bullet weight. Having said that, unless you have your heart set on a 7mm, there are also some great 6.5 bullets out there that could serve your purpose very well and maybe even more economically. I have a 6.5 Creedmoor that I wouldn't hesitate to use on deer size game at those ranges. Hornady and Nosler make factory ammo for it.

thanks for the response to my question some great thoughts . i have not shot a saum have not built any yet either . have built several 280 ack and have another warming up in the bull pen on a mountain rifle for a customer . the saum would be on a rem 700 s/a . the 284 win i would put on a pre 64 win mod 70 . i think that would fit with the action and add some class to the build. i did use the saum 7mm case to build a 257 cartridge. re-designed the case a bit but that was and is a great little cartridge.well i have two actions maybe i will just build both they seem to be highly recommended . thanks again if i get something done i be sure to post it here . mike

For factory ammo, the 7 saum. For the reloader, the 284 win. No question about it...IMO that is ! Only one company I know builds 284 win ammo.

Using a 7mm RSAUM for the Deer family is like shooting Jeeps with Anti Tank Gun.
I have a custom 7mm RSAUM for F-Class with a Graco Recoil Absorber, need it because
we shoot 20 rounds in 20+ minutes. My brain would be like an omlette without the
Graco. Hunting is different, one shot kills hopefully. Accuracy does not have to be quite
.25MOA. Geez use a 6.5 x284 or even a straight .284. Let me tell you reloading ammo
for the RSAUM is a bit tricky-finniky. I dont trust factory ammo for accuracy.
Anyway, 7mm RSAUM is overkill for hunting for hunting Bambi family critters.

Absolutely not true. If you know what you're doing - you will have no difficulty finding an accurate load. During my load development "trials" this week I had two 3 shot groups under 1" @300 yards using H4831SC/180 hybrids and N165/180 Scenar-L's.

Given the choices here, out to 400 yards I'd go with the 284.

Personally when I made this choice I went with a 7-08, though I looked long and hard at the 284. My 7-08 with a 24" barrel loading with 2000MR runs 140ABs or 140 SGKs out at 2940FPS. Out to 400 yards it will run with anything out there.

Does yours like Magnum primers or standard Large Rifle? I'm just about to start load development using the N165/180 Scenar-L combo.

The first load in my 7saum produced what I was after. I wanted between 2850-2900 FPS and .5 MOA. It gave me both and is a joy to shoot. When it hits big game they get hard. 180 Berger VLD hunting, 57.5 grains 4831sc, WLRM primers and Norma brass.
