Im still debating what caliber will perform very well from a 14 inch rem varmint contour barrel... i need to start shopping for a barrel...

the pistil will be primarily target shooting and hunting from a blind.... shooting nothing bigger than white tail...

6x47lapua, 6.5x47, 6 creedmoor, 6.5 creedmoor, 284win, 7mm-08?

Open to suggestions... i dont want to have something that wont burn all the powder and waste some... i will have a side port muzzle brake on it... im leaning hard on 6x47 running 105 bergers...

what would yall do? What would you not do?
Do you already have an XP-100? Later! Frank

Everywhere i see load data on a 7br it looks too slow... all the data ive seen shows 1900fps to 2350 fps.. and id really like to be in the 2600-2800 if i can.... thats why the 7br doesnt interest me... not enough powder behind it it seems like for my purposes...
I don't know if you will have enough barrel length on your XP to burn all the powder in some of the cartridges you are considering, to get you to the speed you see advertised for them.

Then 7mm short mag.

My XP is a varmint weight barrel in 243AI with a muzzle brake. It shoots every bit as well as my Gre-tan built 6x47 Model 700 Varminter and it is not uncommon to get 1/2moa 3 shot groups with 85 gr Speer hunting bullets. Recoil is nothing but wow what a muzzle blast with the brake! I have a 6.5x20 Zeiss on it for glass in a mid grip thumbhole stock. Tom

There's the rub of it. A larger case means MORE unburnt powder. Pistols (CF hunting) are about trade offs and challenges. Maybe someone will chime in that actually knows first hand how many grains a specific powder/ caliber burns in a 14" bbl (Q.L.). Compare this The 6.5x 47 Rem Mag uses 17.3 grs. less powder than my 6.5 IHMSA both with 129gr bullets and the IHMSA is only 126 fps faster (these are their best accuracy loads).

I have two XP-100s one in 6mmBR Norma center grip and a rear grip repeater in 7mm08. I am currently working on loads for pigs with three 708s one BLR, the XP and a Model 700. As far as powder goes the Norma 203B is the very best I've found.
What I did find is that the volumes of the Remington cases are all over the map and they are soft. It is for these reasons that I would choose the 6.5 X 47 Lapua which I have in a rifle. Incidentally I checked in Quick Load and the powder burnt in a 21 inch barrel 708 is 99% and in a 15 inch barrel 97% using Norma 203B.

I have a .221 fireball and a 243win. I have shot others 7mm/08 and .308win. Depending on the range and game you plan to hunt on what caliber that I would choose. For deer and varmints I would choose a 6mm caliber. For elk I would shoot a rifle. If I were to elk Hunt with a 7mm or 30 caliber.

What is your max distance for hunting whitetails?
Sorry it took me so long to see this thread.

After having my Rem 600 (XP-100 w/different markings) chambered in 260 Rem, I kinda feel constrained by the 2.8" max COL and will probably go w/6.5 Creemoor next time.
My intent was the Shilen #3 contour so I could have another barrel in 338 Federal made up for it to switch with.

Since the XP is a singleshot you don't have to worry about typical COL.
I have had XP's that use both the 7mmDakota and the 338 Lapua

6x47L - I would use the 105 A-Max on deer. 105 Hybrid for distance.
The Dasher would work as well for the distance on deer you will have and still be a nice distance cartridge.
6.5x47L - Probably the 123 A-Max (or 140 gr) grain for deer. The 130 AB is also a great deer bullet.
I like the 162 grain A-Max for the 7-08. The 140 grain NBT is also a great deer bullet as is the 120 grain NBT.
You will lose about 300 fps compared to the same cartridges in rifle lengths.
