Just wondering if anyone has done any work or has experience witht he "mini-Mauser" 799. I have a 224 cal Rem 40X take-off BBl that needs cut down. i thought about a rechamber to 221 FB and onto a 799 action. I can take an honest answer...am I crazy? Looking for a way to inexpensively go 221 with the barrel i have, at 20 inches for a walkabout varminter

as long as you not to mad about small groups it would make a really nice looking walking rifle , action are stronge enough but hard to find nice triger for, at one time about 10years ago 6mm-223 was very popular in south africa for small antelope and warthogs
meny rilfe where made one the zestava(same action as rem 799) mini mauser and would shoot true 1/2 inch 100yard groups from light hunting rifles

so you not to mad :)

From what I have seen as well as read, the little Zastava actions are pretty nice. They are not really a "Mauser", but they are still a good action, especially for a rifle as you intend to build. They come in a similar configuration to what you have planned, as do the mini-Mausers produced by CZ which are similar, so I see no reason why your idea won't work. The 799's I have seen have been rather accurate as well, so with a quality barrel properly installed, i don't see why it would not be accurate as well.

As long as your barrel is in good shape with enough diameter to be threaded to the action, then I can't see why it couldn't be done or why it would be a bad idea.

I personally think it's a great idea. The .221FB is an awesome round and you plan to chamber it in a great little rifle, what's so bad about that? Light, compact, accurate, sounds horrible to me! ;D

I have a couple mini Mauser actions. They have a 22mm x 1.5mm thread and don't use an internal torque shoulder. They are decent actions and the triggers can be adjusted and smoothed up so they are decent. They will never be a Jewell though or for that matter a Timney. They use a Sako type extractor and have a side safety. I have 223 & 223 Improved barrels for 1 and 7.62x39 and a wildcat 30PPC for the other. They make 3 different case head dimensions in their bolts. THE biggest issue in getting a mini to be accuarate is squaring the bolt lugs. It is an absolute must as I've never seen one be square yet. The 7.62 x39 factory barrel would shoot 2" groups with good handloads. After I squared the lugs-sub-inch. Great rifle to carry!!!
