788 Rem Action for barrel same as Rem 700?

But the thread on the 788 is smaller than the 700 so a smith should be able to rethread a take off 700 barrel to suit your 788. It will increase the cost though so may not longer be worthwhile.

You are correct. It'll also need the counterbore removed and the headspace set. I don't recall the tenon length of the 788 so I can't say if the chamber will have to be cut as well, to set the headspace or if it can be set with the barrel shoulder/recoil lug.
I took his question as pertaining to a simple swap, which often won't work even with the same model, and be withinproper headspace specs.
 
Wasn't trying to correct you G&G, just adding another option. I suspect you are right that it might involve recutting the chamber. Like I said, the smithing work might make it uneconomical.
