REM 788 TRIGGER

Just wondering before I go buy a Timney, is there any way to adjust the factory trigger on a Rem 788. It's a 22-250 that has lived long and proud and is now needing a little tlc. If it doesn't work, I'll buy a Timney. Just looking for suggestions. Thank you in advance.

There is no adjustment for the 788 trigger. At least none that I could find. They have a non-enclosed spring that is a real pain to back in the right spot so I would advise against removing the trigger until you have the Timney to go back on unless you are a very patient man. I did read recently about a gunsmith who is supposed to perform really good trigger jobs on 788s but can't remember his name. A quick search might turn his name up.

A friend of mine got a Timney for his 788 and the difference is night and day.

Thank you. It's pretty much what I thought but thought someone might have a trick up their sleeve. Like I said, she ain't much to look at but she shoots good and would shoot better if I could lighten up the trigger a little.

I have three 788s, a .223, 6mm Rem & .22-250. One has a Canjar, one a Timney and the third has a modified factory trigger. The Canjar is easily the best, but no longer available. The Timney is good, somewhat better than my modified trigger.

The modifications consist of drilling and tapping the die-cast housing to install set screws limiting engagement and overtravel. The Timney is (AFAIK) the best, current choice. If you can find an old Canjar, grab it.

Do you happen to have the drawings as to where to drill and tap the housing on the 788 triggers to put some adjustment on them?

HI. The 788 trigger mod has been posted somewhere and I may have a copy of it. If I do find it, I'll forward it to you. I've done sevaeral in years past.
