I am loading 150 nosler spitzers in a 308. I have used imr 4895 and varget and have used the hunting load in the sierra book also the accurate load and can not get this rifle to shoot. This is groups of 2.5 inches at 100 yards. Am I expecting to much out of this rifle. Thanks Perk

No you are not expecting too much from this rifle! Try some Sr 168 Match bullets with 41.5 gr of H4895 or IMR 4895 along with 210 federal match primers and you should be under 1' at 100 yards. You may need to skin bed this rifle. You may also need to change the torque on the stock screws. Try a very firm torque on the front screw and and snug fit on the receiver screw. You may need to hand lap the barrel also. Good luck and let us know how this works out.

VTR has the triangular barrel.
I am not impressed with Remingtons penchant for gimmickry.
According to their literature the triangular barrel contour 'enhances accuracy'.....and...... 'is a product of years of rigorous development focused on reducing weight, enhancing rigidity and promoting rapid heat dissipation'.......I guess the fluting method is too 'old school'
Yet it still weighs 7-1/2 # with a 22' barrel.
Maybe it dissipates heat too well and every shot is a cold bore shot:)
I would let Remington know your displeasure.

This rifle ought to shoot much better than that. You are not expecting too much. I have seen these at the range,in .308) shooting 1'. You just have to find the load that is right for your gun.

I have a VTR in .308 as well, and at first I thought I was gonna sell it.
The stock on it is junk, too much torque on the bolts cause it to twist and turn giving you crummy stability. It is not a free floating barrel setup. You can either shave it down, or buy a different stock.
Since I put a decent stock on it and found the load that works well in it, it has been producing sub moa at 100 yds and great groups at 200 as well.

I am currently running for loads:
Varget 42.5 gr
Sierra Matchking 168 gr HPBT
win cases at 2.03 length and a C.O.L. 2.810'
CCI BR-2 Large Rifle primer

Hope this helps you out some. The rifle is definatly a shooter.

I think a new Remington 700 in 308 Win with handloads shooting over .5in 5shot groups at 100 yards is an embarassment. Send it back to Remington.

Get a VLS for roughly the same price. I'm not too much on fluting or the odd shapes of barrels they are doing. I like sporter barrels when you have to carry it far, and heavy barrels when you don't.

Although, I do have a soft spot for the 700 Boone and Crockett.
