Looking at replacing a barrel on a Rem 700 that is toast, with a pre chambered and finished pre-fit. The gun would be for hunting, but would like it to be accurate enough to be fun at the range.
How big a job is it for a gunsmith to fit the barrel to the action? I'm assuming there is a shoulder that needs to be faced to get the headspace correct? Plain barrel so no indexing is required.
This is about a 1967 vintage 700. Are the receivers still the same and no complications to be expected with a drop in?
The reason I ask is I'm wondering what I should be looking for in a gunsmith. Routine job, or difficult and I should be finding someone specialized? Any special tools I should be checking to see that they have? Suggested torque on the barrel so it does not move?
