rem. 700 for Fclass

Do many people use it? I would think that since its such a slower rate of fire that a 700 wouldn't be a bad action for F class but would like some input. What mods would you recommend, how's it compare to shooting a custom for F class, etc.

Thanks!

A 700 makes a nice gun for F-Class. F-T/R World Champ, Nik Taylor, builds all of his guns on 700s and they shoot. My first F-Class gun was a 700 in 6BR then 284 Shehane and it was an excellent gun. If you want to shoot one of the short mags in F-Open, I'd get a custom like a BAT or Panda but I found the 700 to be as good as anything for the 308 bolt face cases. A good chamber and pillar bedding job are necessary either way.

It's been over a decade since I've seen a decent factory barrel on a Rem 700.

But buying an older one for $300-$400 and having a good smith put on a new barrel of high quality in a good caliber is a solid approach.

Most of the factory guns (with factory barrels) I see competing in F-Class are Savages. These $800-$1200 models do OK, but usually get beaten by $3-4k custom jobs. Not bad starter guns though. If the shooter is up to it, I've seen factory Savages shoot lots of scores that will qualify for expert.

Good, I'm hoping to hear more of the same. The gun will pretty much be a custom, trued action custom barrel, high end stock etc.

I had one for awhile on my first F-Open rifle. If you square and true the action, replace the trigger with a Jewell or Kelbly, put on a good custom barrel and nice stock, you will have a GREAT F-Open rifle! But after all that, you could spend an additional 5-600 bucks and do it REALLY right! The Rem action, once done over correctly is as good as ANY other custom action. But to purchase a good Rem. action, work it over properly, you will be coming fairly close to the expense of a nice custom action. However, if you could get the action cheaply somewhere and have it done up by a good 'smith, there is NOTHING wrong with a Remington action..

I have one already on my back up gun that's trued up. I know my stock wouldn't be the best for f class but right now it has a decent shooting 6.5 L barrel on it. I've actually never shot f class before but am going to try it out on the 18th. The matches around here seem to be 600 yds.

If you are going to strictly be at 600, I would opt for either a 6.5 x 47 Lapua or a 6 Dasher. If you plan on going out to 1000 from time to time, there are other options to consider. However, for 600, the aforementioned 2 cartridges would be very difficult to beat!

There is a guy named Larry Smart that can make a 700 action a precision piece. I have one of his and it's very nice. Actually I have 2.rem 700's that I compete with. The other is a 4 digit serial numer with a replacement bolt. Shooting it this weekend

I take a 700 true it, time it to cock on open, install and time new bolt handle, and drill for a pinned recoil lug. What you end up with is and action thats trued and timed better than most all custom actions. But you end up with about the same money in it as you would a custom and you will not recoup your investment when you sell the gun like you will with a custom.

I'm not sure what was done to it. I had Bob Green true it up, I know the recoil lug is not pinned. It seems though that it should work well. I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row because I have feeling that I'll be re stocking this thing over the winter.

I think you will be just fine. Most of shooting Fclass comes from you, the weapon is important but you are more. Get them both right and you can start running your self broke buying components and entry fees like the rest of us. Lol

haha that's kinda what I was thinking. Now I'm starting to research what stock I would like to put on it. I think that I want to stick with the bipod for now, and am kinda leaning on a laminate stock but not sure. Also I don't want to screw myself incase I want to switch over to a rest so I still have some thoughts to consider.

If I was building a new F T/R rifle I would start with the trued 700 from PT&G. My guess is that it will shoot as well as any custom action. At $529 it is hard to beat

Thanks Trovan, but I have one the Bob Green did and I have faith in him as he seems to be a heck of a machinist plus I already have it in hand. I can't wait to see how the first match goes but I don't doubt that I'll be switching it over to a more "f class" oriented set up. Right now Im chewing on a new stock. I really like my Eliseo on my other gun but they seem to not be a favorite in the f class game for some reason, but from what I've seen out of mine I don't know why.

You aren't going wrong using Bob Green. He knows what he is doing.

As for not seeing more of the Eliseo chassis - it's 100% personal preference in this game. I personally don't care for the Eliseo chassis based on fit and aesthetics, but that has everything to do with my personal preference and nothing to do with it as an accurate platform. I know guys who like it and do really well with it.

Potatoe,

I didn't read close enough to see what you already have. You have a great action. Make sure you have a good load and focus on wind reading. Your rig is fine as it is I'm sure. Good barrel, good load and read the wind. Thats all you need.

And why wait until Oct 18 when you can come to Bridgeville, DE on October 11 and give it a try at 600 yards??

No problem, it does seem like this game is different since it relies much on the shooter. I know many people have said they don't like the tube chassis but for me it fits very well and I really like it, so much so that it is a top contender for the new stock for my 700. I'm still thinking hard on a laminate stock but then again, its a long winter so I'll have some time to chew on it. . . .

I would have if this weekend wasn't shot, the wind and bad weather ruined this weekend for any type of setting up for me. I wished I'd realized there were so many decent shoots this close but I'm sure that it won't be my last on the 18th, I'll see you soon enough at Bridgeville :D

Potatoe,

If you want to use a chassis, then check out Gary Eliseo's new F-Open system here: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2015/05/new-f1-f-open-stock-from-competition-machine/

This would be a great F-Open system and it should be available in the near future.

As a former tubegun owner, I would NOT recommend the standard tubegun for F-class. The standard tubegun chassis was designed for prone/sling shooting and that is its best application. IMHO, it's sub-optimal as an f-class chassis.
