Rem 700 7mm rem mag, bolt stuck

I also added some "Hobo" gun oil to the shroud threads, and a small drop on the cocking ramp. This combined with cleaning the build up from the shroud threads made a BIG difference in the actioning of the bolt. It's still a little stiff, but much much closer to the tension you would expect to experience with most bolt guns.

One thing I see from your pictures is you need to clean the shaved brass from the inside of the bolt face and under the extractor. This can cause stiff bolt function and even the lock up you described. It creates too little head space. Brass cases expand when fired and until that case cooled some it was wedged against the chamber shoulder and the shavings between the rim and the bolt face creating too little head space.

Next from your pictures there is NO LUBE on the bolt lugs. Clean the inside lug recess with plenty of solvent and a brush. Then put some grease on the bolt lugs and operate the bolt a few times. I bet the stiffness goes away.

The brass was left from when I took it to the range and it started hanging up. I scrubbed it good and went over it with a dental pick to scrape away any left over brass. I attached a 12ga brass brush to my drill and used it to clean the inside of the action and the front of the lug recess. I am out of grease so I just used gun oil until I can make a run to the gun shop. I also took off the scope rail and will be picking up another one. It appears to have been a case of multiple issues working together. Once I cleaned the threads on the bolt shroud, cleaned and lubes the bolt ramp, backed off the scope mount screws, and lubed the bolt lugs it feel like a different gun. After I pick up some gun grease I'll take it to the range and see if it performs any better once it's fired

I had an issue with my Remington 700 shortly after I started shooting it. The bolt kept getting harder and harder to open. I figured it maybe my loads. Eventually had to beat the bolt open. I took the bolt apart and discovered the the firing pin cross pin (or retaining pin) was deformed into a bit of a ”W” shape. I was thinking the original may not have been hard enough or missed heat treat. A new pin solved tge problem and never had another problem

Questions for the OP...
  • Was the bolt hard to cycle on an empty chamber?
  • Was the bolt hard to close on the first round chambered?
  • Was the bolt stiff to retract starting with the first round?
  • Did it get stiffer with each shot fired?
  • Can you post pictures of the fired cases?
So turns out I did have the spent cases in one of my range bags I just forgot i kept them lol.

I noticed that each one of them has a small ding from where they were ejected, I guess. I made sure to put it in the pics you just have to zoom in. Also notice how the sides look like some one sand papered them from where they were pulled out of the chamber

I did insert the bolt when I had the firing pin removed. It slid in and fell down by just good ole gravity and locked into place with a bit of slop front to back that is not there when the firing pin is in
Yeah that’s totally normal. There will be a little slop without the FP spring pressure holding the bolt lugs back against the abutments.

I have seen this quite a few times.
It appears during assembly the pin is not seated correctly and during firing the pin vibrates out.
It has appeared worse on models with the firing pin spring that resembles an ‘S’ when cocked.
A simple pin swap fixes the issue.

Cheers.
