Rem 700/6mm ppc

I need some advice from some of the smiths on here. I have a Rem 700 chambered in 222. I would like to rebarrel to 6mm ppc. The thing is the bolt face is for the 222 which is appx .378 would need to be opened to appx .441 to suit the PPC case. Is this a standard job/ expensive or something to avoid. Would I also need a Sako type extractor then installed if doable. TKS

Buy a PTG bolt and have it fitted to your bbl/receiver as well as timed for proper primary extraction. You could keep or sell your existing bolt. If you sell it, it'll go a long way toward paying for the new one.

That said, in the end, you're probably better off selling the action or rifle and either building on a custom action or buying a used rifle, be it a 700 or a custom. With some patience, you can find a good used Rem br rifle for under a grand.

Ultimately, it's up to you but strictly from a monetary perspective, it seldom makes sense to spend much on a factory actioned br rifle. You almost never get your investment back from them when you can buy one ready to go for $850 and your untouched action will bring close to $400

Thanks guys for the advice. I will have to think about all of this. For some reason I assumed it was a simpler process than this.
gunsandgunsmithing's advice is accurate, I initially purchased a BR Rem 700 barreled action (30BR) and added my own stock. It got me started in UBR Modified class. It shot well and still have it for club matches. I learned a lot from shooting and reloading for it and now shoot a custom. It was a good step for me, I could have went the custom route, but was not sure benchrest was for me at the time. Lots of used BR rifles out there, keep an eye out and check with some of the local shooters they may be upgrading or just getting a new rifle, be patient and keep asking questions here. I just pickup a used Kelbly actioned rifle back in October. just started a little load development, it looks very promising.

There is a fine PPC 40X for sale in the want ads here. No brainer.
Getting that across the boarder would be a nightmare. Reason I done this post is because I already have the Rem 700 222, stock and bottom metal. I'm not trying to build a bench gun. Just a varmint barreled good shooter. I didn't think that opening a bolt face was that big of a deal.

No big deal at all. It’s the exact same job as putting in a Sako or M16 extractor and just adjusting the bolt face to the diameter you need. And as 10Xshooter mentioned bush the firing pin at the same time. Probably $250-$300 USD worth of work.

Sorry didn't realize you were up north!

Most of the suggestions were guys looking for a cheaper faster way. Yes, you can have the bolt opened, sako installed and pin bushed for about $300 US

I'd do that and enjoy your varminter.

Thanks for the info. Could you tell me why I would need a Sako extractor installed. I can see needing one if the bolt face is larger than the case being chambered for, but in this case I would be opening the bolt face to the proper case head size. Just trying to learn here. TKS

Ops are(not necessarily in order)
remove oem extractor
dial in bolt
machine extractor groove to accept bushing to reduce bolt face diameter
machine bushing..yep, it's pretty thin
solder bushing into place
machine bushing and bolt face
machine(different op and setup) for ejector pin, if used. Likely plug hole if not used
machine for sako or m16 style extractor
and parts

This is off the top of my head so others can correct me if
I left something out!

This does not include bushing the fp hole and machining the pin. Add about $100. Pretty much a must have job when doing this much work anyway. Nor does it include bolt handle nor handle installation to correct primary extraction. Thanks Remington!

Now go price a ptg bolt with everything other than a few minor things already done as received, with custom od to fit your receiver better than the oem. Yes, it can get deeper, like reaming the bolt raceway for an oversized bolt too. Gonna change springs while you're there? How about fitting the bolt shroud and timing trigger handoff? Yes, some things would need done to a new bolt too, if you choose.

We haven't touched on truing work yet. All told, I hope you see why I said going custom or used makes a lot of sense if money is any factor.

Again, I'm probably leaving something out and anyone, feel free to jump in and correct or add to my post.

Please be patient with me I am trying to learn. Why would I have to have done the above if I am opening up the bolt face to suit the cartridge. Would it not be just simple machining., and also why the Sako extractor.
As I said not trying to argue, just trying to learn so I will have a better idea in the future on such things.

The stock 700 extractor has to come out to open the bolt face up. The simple explanation is 700 extractors come in 223, 308 and Magnum sizes not PPC and wont work with the PPC bolt face. The 2 reliable aftermarket extractors that work well and just need basic machine work to install are the Sako or M16 types.

We turn the firing pins down to .062” and then bush the firing pin hole in the bolt to fit properly to handle high pressure of the PPC case and to fix the crappy fit from Remington. The smaller firing pin diameter handles high pressure much than the standard 700 size and stops primers from blanking, or blowing the indented part of the primer from the cup back into the bolt. It is a big issue with PPC and BR cases.

Opening up the bolt face only to the size of the ppc, will leave a fair bit of the original extractor groove. The ppc rim will get caught by this and extraction or ejection will not be consistent. The solution to this is to completely remove the original extractor groove and install a bushing to reduce it back to fit the ppc.
The original extractor will not spring large enough to catch the ppc rim. That is why a different extractor is needed. You have 2 choices, a Sako or a mini M16. I have done both. There are fans of both. They will both work.
