Rem 700 6BR

I have an old beat up Rem 700 30-06 that just sits in my safe, I do not enjoy shooting it. It's an old ADL hunting rifle.

Lately I've been thinking about rebarreling to something more enjoyable to shoot. I primarily only target shoot. Max is about 200yds. I've been reading about 6BR, and think that would be a neat choice. I do hand load, so a lack of factory ammo is not an issue.

Now the tricky part.
Is this something that I can achieve with off the shelf parts? Or is it 100% necessary to have a smith put this together. I'm not looking for precision, and I'm not afraid to buy some tools.

The 700 s require headspace setting so yes I would say let a good "Smith" do it for you. O D C R comes to mind. (WSMNUT here on the site)

6BR would work best in a short action but it is doable if you really wanted to. In the age of pre fits you can easily do this with purchased parts. The only thing you would really need is a set of headspace gauges, action wrench, and a barrel vise. It may be worth your while to contact Urbanrifleman here on the site. He more than likely has everything you need.

You can do it yourself with a nut barrel and a few tools. While a long action isn’t optimal, it will work fine.
I too suffered the recoil of full ‘06 loads. I found that shooting 125 grain bullets was OK on my shoulder. I made up some reduced loads with H4895 and some “full loads” with 125s. The reduced loads were easy to shoot but the regular loads were not offensive and they sent the lite bullet screaming well over 3000 fps.
Just something to think about.
Good luck!

All great input.

I could load light, good solution to the reduce the recoil.

I fully expect the barrel to be a bear to remove. And I had not considered having the face of the action squared. That is a good point.

I love to tinker, I have a difficult time leaving this old gun alone. I have a few Garands and an 03A3, so still plenty of 30-06 to be fired.

My 03A3 was the reason I tried the lite loads. It sat in my safe for years after I put some full power 165 grain bullet loads thru it.

Start by trading your old beat up Rem 700 ADL LA to someone for their old beat up Rem 700 ADL SA. The Rem SA works great for the 6mmBR. I know because that is what I did.

Wrap around action wrench, heavy mallet and a decent barrel vise should get it loose with a couple of good whacks on handle - most of the time.

Yeah squaring would be cool. For DIY a RemAge fits the bill. Need a headspace gsuge and nut wrench.

Where are you located?

Your old Remingtons barrel might be a tight sob to get off. The front of the action should probably be squared. Let a gunsmith get it apart and do that. Then you can get a nut barrel from the @urbanrifleman and install it yourself.
I put Kroil oil ( in the barrel threads with the muzzle facing down ) once to twice a day and let it soak for 2 weeks. Put it in a barrel vice and put some heat , heat gun, on the action wrench and have had very good results doing that. Was using a cheater bar but really didn’t need it. Don’t know if I have been lucky or the Kroil and heat worked great.

No harm in trying. I can start the kroil’n tomorrow.

To be honest with you, by the time you buy the action wrench, the go gauge, barrel vice, resin, etc, etc, you would be better off to have a good gunsmith remove the old barrel and square up the reciever face, lap the lugs and chamber and crown a barrel. You can still DIY the stock bedding, trigger upgrade, bed the bases and lap the rings. You will still have a big part in the construction and you will get a fine shooting rifle in the end. But if it’s something you’d like to tinker with on a few projects it might pencil out?

The easy at home solution is a barrel Vice, action wrench and a barrel set up for a barrel nut.

I can tell you the 6BR or 6BRA will probably put a smile on your face.
It’s a fantastic cartridge.
