Rem 700 270 options?

I have an old remington 700 in 270, action is in good shape. It was given to me so I am considering building it out. New barell and stock to begin what are my caliber options I can change it to? Thanks!

You could put any "long action" cartridge on it and also many short action cartridges work perfectly fine in a long action. Unless you are trying to shoot elephants it will probably fit.

Define your mission then proceed with selecting your cartridge.

After you choose a chamber, you’ll know the caliber of the barrel...

You're not wrong, Tommie, but that's fairly stale on the list of trolling comments on internet forums.

You'll have to do better than that if you want to rise to the ranks of somebody like myself.

Without changing the bolt face, there are any number of cartridges with that on which that bolt face would work, so choosing a cartridge/caliber is wide open. Something like a 280 AI would be a good choice for one.

Nothing wrong with just rebarreling to the .270 you already have. Truth be told you can spend a lot of money trying to out do the .270 but when its all said and done it's not going to be by much. If you are planning to do a lot of shooting past 600 yards I would look at the 6.5-06 and the .280 with the corresponding Ackley improved options of each.

Jack O’Connor wasn’t wrong. The 270 is one of the great cartridges of all time. If I could only have one caliber to hunt in Texas, where I do hunt, that would be it. Hands down. I rebarrel a 700 classic with a Shilen #3 10 twist barrel. It is my favorite deer rifle. I have others that are more sexy and tricked out, but I usually take that rifle out first.

You live in Georgia, it will be hard to out versatile a 243! I shot one in fclass. Hard on barrels but the ballistics are solid. 55gr@4000
100gr@2900-3000.

The .270 is a good cartridge, very versatile but realistically, it's a lousy case design. If you want to keep the same bore and case, look at the .270 Gibbs.

Rich Sherman has a line of cartridges that are long action standard bolt face. Kind of an ultra Ackley Improved.case.https://shermanwildcatcartridges.com/

He's a real great guy if you need to talk to him about them.

Downhill has a very valid point. If you intend to handload all of your ammo, there are almost too many choices. If you forgot your ammo on a hunt, the corner gas station won’t have any 7.7 Jap, let alone that 6.5 Super Vampire Killermore. (or 257 Roberts for that matter)

You will probably see .233, 30-30, 243, 270, 3006.
