rem 700 223 magazine modification

What work needs to be done to remove the rear magazine block from a Remington 700 in 223 to allow the longer 80gr. ammo to be used out of the magazine. Is it as easy as removing the block and extending the follower? What other problems can I expect.

If you must use the magazine,why not just use 77gr bullets? b.c.of 77gr-.360 b.c.of 80gr .400not much difference.____treeman

I don't have to use the magazine it just helps to shoot fast in changing winds at our no rules run what you brung games. There is a distinct difference between the 77gr. Sierra and 80 Gr. Berger VLD at 500 meters.

the first thing i would do is remove the spacer and load some DUMMY rounds with the bullet and try them for function and if you dont have the heaver bullet i would seat the lighter one longer to see if it would work

only a sugestion

You will need to cut back the bolt stop, or replace it with one for the 243/308, so the bolt comes back far enough to pick up the new, longer) rounds.

Thank you. I have the longer rds, I have been shooting them the last several months. I guess that I will remove the block, extend the follower and modify the bolt stop if needed.
