Rem 700 22.250 barrel to a 223AI

Is there enough room to rechamber a Rem 22.250 barrel into a 223 AI. The Rem barrel is a 26" VSFS i think its called that. Bought in 1990 - how do you tell if there is enough room to make the change.

Moorepower and Walt Krafft are right you'd have to cut off quite a bit and it wouldn't leave you with much shank in the chamber area of the barrel.

Also, unless you're doing the work yourself, IMO, it's not really the wisest financial, or otherwise even, decision to rechamber a factory barrel and even a pourer one if it's a used barrel.

My gunsmith did same thing for me. the only reason was that the barrel was a hummer.
I know it is a cheap factory bbl but it is a real shooter. still shoots awesome as a .223.
Unless it shoots exceptionally well, I wouldn't do it. buy a new custom barrel. my 2 cents marc

FYI I was able to have enough room to rechamber the 22.250 to a 223AI. Now to see how well it shoots after I get a new bolt nose for the Savage Model 10. Thanks again for all oy the comments and suggestions.

I tried to tell where the barrel came from so people would notice the size of the barrel for that specific action. I was trying to show the barrel so that I could get a recommendation on the size of it and would it work. I did not say that it was for a Rem 700 but rather from a Rem 700. Sorry for the confusion, the chamber was .025 off center from the factory. Rechambering it to a 223 AI has trued the chamber - now to see how it shoots. Sorry for the confusion - thanks for all the help.

Was there enough shank on that barrel you could cut the entire old chamber off and still have enough shank to chamber a new one in 223AI ??

I didn't cut the entire chamber off, just the tenon and 3/4" off the barrel. Let's hope it shoots. I didn't measure the barrel but it looks like 24 and 1/2" will measure when I get a chance. Yes there was enough for a complete 223AI chamber.

I ask because if you don't completely cut the chamber off and you said the old chamber was off center won't the reamer just kind of follow the path of the old chamber to a large degree and it'll still be off center. I'm not a gunsmith or machinist so I don't know, just asking is all.

Yes it would. Not even sure if a boring bar would work, to cut a true chamber. But, the target will tell the story!
