Rem 257 Roberts

Looking at a Remington 722 in 257 Roberts. Appears to be an ADL as it is checkered but no hinged floor plate. The front and rear sights removed and has what appears to be an old Weaver style 4x scope (no name on it). The serial number is stamped inside left side of receiver. SN#341XX dates to 1948. Bolt is not stamped??. Barrel condition ???? Gun condition I would say 70 poss. 80%. Asking price is $375.00. Should I run with it??
thanks

Check the extractor , I think they're getting scarce .

Good price on a fine cartridge. As for extractors they can still be found, or you could have bolt given the sako treatment.. Just a thought.

One of the great cartridges of all times. My sad tale is that I could have purchased my Uncle's when he retired from deer hunting but passed on it. So the cartridge is not the issue here - it's great.

But I'd personally pass on this rifle since it's so old with an unknown history unless you're prepared to possibly put some money into it meaning a new barrel depending on your accuracy standards or if you want a "project'. The last thing I want is a "project" but some shooters enjoy restoring old firearms - I'd rather be hunting or shooting.

If you decide to proceed I'd at least inspect the barrel with a bore scope for pitting. Also, I'd carefully exam the bolt lugs, bolt face, and extractor condition. Also check the trigger and safety for functionality.

I would buy it,pretty hard to lose on that deal . If it does not shoot to your standards just resell it with full disclosure and still net a profit.

Fine rifle. I’ve got a few 722/721s. Actions are almost worth that much. Could always drop it in a 700 stock and use 700 bottom metal. 700 triggers mount right up with a little filing to the tang.
If you decide to pick it up, I’ve got plenty of new brass (and an extra extractor if that one is bad.. shhhh.. don’t tell anyone)

Personally, I have not had issues with the existing extractors but I do happen to have a couple extras. They’re as rare as hens teeth, but a standard bolt face 721/722 factory extractor is not a problem at my house.
Problem with the average guy paying someone to install a Sako extractor in a 721/722 is your 1/2 way to purchasing a Ptg 700 bolt with the abundantly available 700 extractors. Although, a Sako extractor is also a very good choice.
Just buy the dern thing. If you have any issues, let me know.

I have one, shoots lights out. Keep in mind you have seat the bullet pretty deep given mag length..Think it right at 2.8"
But whatever jump I have does not matter. Stiff charge of I 4350 and 100 Sierra is what works for me

I love the .257 Roberts. Kinda thinking out loud here but at some point - the cartridge was updated to handle +P pressures and the ammo commonly sold for it now is not considered safe in the older rifles. I just don't recall how far back that was. No matter if one reloads and is aware that most factory ammo might not be an option.

I was just reloading for mine yesterday and it reminded me of the one drawback it has. The cases stretch and have to be trimmed often. Always thought of an Ackley but never pulled the "trigger" on that. BTW, I have a lot of H4895 powder, so I tried it. Shot very well. Do not know the velocity though.
