Reloading Scale That Works

Monte, I agree about the low SD not being entirely charge weight dependent, that has been my experince also. I find that seating depth, neck tension and primers are more important past a certain level of charge weight precision.

Your results on target, however, are the really interesting part and the kind of thing I hope to be able to try. Thanks again!

Will this lead to a individual kernel weighting fest that will have everybody looking for the best lot of a particular powder that has the most uniform kernels. :-\

And when they say half a grain they will have to specify if they mean weight or half a kernel! ;D

Granule uniformity is, of course, the real key to accuracy. Presently I file each end of each granule down to ensure perfectly uniform length. I used to measure them with a micrometer after filing, but that got a little tedious, so I made a gauge to check them. I'd like to rig up a counter mechanism to the gauge, then I could eliminate weighing altogether.

With about 1200 granules in a .30-06 charge (2400 ends to file) it does extend my reloading time a bit, but I've almost got the SD under control. On the plus side, filing a few thousand granules makes weighing primers feel like a fun day at the beach.

PS - oceanfront property in Arizona for sale, inquire within... ;D

Your lovely little collective dig at all of us precision handloaders made my day German! It also reminded me of a spoof article I read many years ago about a new wildcat that saw the .50BMG case necked down to accept a 2gn weight sewing needle. One of the slight downsides of the design was that the neck inside dia.was too small to accept the charge, so 100gn of powder had to fed in through the flash-hole one kernel at a time using tweezers. This surreal image always stuck with me for some reason, and I'm pleased to be able to add a vision of you at your handloading bench filing down powder kernels to that of the other poor beggar with his tweezers.

PS before somebody else asks, what number of file do you recommend for VarGet?

I have found if I drill a hole through each kernal it burns more evenly.
Very time consuming but I think it's worth it.

AJ - surely you mean ream / uniform the hole as the manufacturer has already put one in for you? Doesn't Sinclair do a uniformer? - if not, a good commercial opportunity to supply the keen handloader!

WARNING,....WARNING!!!!

Absolutely they do but Midway is a little cheaper but is back ordered on the small powder hole deburing/uniforming tool but has plenty of the large powder deburing/uniforming tools in stock, REMEMBER TO FILE THE POWDER GRANULES PRIOR TO POWDER HOLE DEBURING/UNIFORMING OR POWDER GRANULES MAY CRUMBLE!!!!
