Reloading/gun storage in a shed

Hey everyone, it looks like I will be moving to a new home, and will need to build a shed as my reloading/gun room. The plan is to have it insulated and have electrical run to it. It would be climate controlled via A/C and heater. The safe would be bolted to the floor as well. My question is, has anyone else had experience doing this, and how does it work for you? Are there any other recommendations to add to what I already have? I live in New England with varying weather, hence the insulating and climate control. Thanks!

i stored a dozen long guns in a plywood box in an unheated, uncooled storage unit for 10 years once. never had any rust ect at all. every place is different and you gotta go by your local conditions. if you are gonna heat/cool/insulate the place you should be able to keep the inside environment plenty good for your stuff. AC will dehumidify some but Mite need to add a dehumidifier and mabie one in the safe but since youll be there often you can determine that as you go. sounds like it should be a fine man cave where you can get away from it all to. Id think about some sort of security system and internet connection to.

My Dad did the same thing when he was caring for my grandmother. Moved into her small house that didn’t have room for his guns and reloading equipment. Built a shed out back, 2x6 walls and spray foam insulation. Climate controlled. Can’t tell ya how it would have turned out because a neighbor observed him taking his goods to and fro and relieved him from everything one weekend.

If the shed is climate controlled it should be ok with regular checks but my personal opinion is they would do better in the house.

“relieved him”. ya i am always concerned about that to. i tend to move my stuff around at nite when i hope no one notices. a little extra effort but so far its worked.

The weather varies considerably here in eastern PA from season to season from hot humid days to below freezing. So having adequate environmental controls is high on my list of priorities for both firearms and reloading components.

However, no matter which storage option you select, I would inspect my firearms in storage every 6 months or so to verify condition. I run a lightly oiled patch down the bore of rifles and pistols in storage every 6 to 9 months. I also wipe the exterior surfaces down with a lightly oiled cloth.

When I met the late James Phillips aka JamesnTN at his home in middle Tennessee he had a very well set up loading / gun room in a detached shed. It was finished on the inside as well as insulated and air conditioned. Judging from the quality and quantity of guns and reloading gear in there, I feel comfortable in saying that he wasn’t having any issues.

Get an old refrigerator. Cut off the cord, store power and primers in it I store the primers in the freezer compartment and powder down below. And second to the dehumidifier!

No windows, the strongest steel door they make with a deadbolt, internet for security system, several cameras, well lit exterior, mean dog to live inside. Big enough to drive in, close door and load/unload away from looky-Lou’s. Heat/AC. When you think you have enough outlets triple it, good beer fridge, paint the concrete floor white, and make the whole building roughly 10 times bigger than you initially thought you should.

Golden rods in the safe and a dehumidifier are cheap insurance. I have a 12 x 18 cabin I built to shoot out of and I run a dehumidifier in it continuously. I ran the drain hose through the wall outside so I wouldn’t have to screw around with that.

This is great. Thank you for all the feedback everyone! A lot if what everyone has said will be implemented. I also will be moving to the nicer part of town, which makes my nerves a bit less unsettled.

Concrete floor, insulate the walls and roof. Good air movement in the building. Heat & A/C is a must. Would also use dew rods in the safe or safes. I second the remark on outlets....never can have too many. If you have a wall you think you will never need one...put two there. I prefer 4 gang outlets.
I run A/C all summer in my building. It gets way humid here in summer. Keeps the air dry and temp never goes over 78 degrees. Also internet access for security and cameras.
Take your time and plan it right. You will not regret it.

I love my gun shed. 20 years now. Wish sometimes it was bigger. Classic rock when I’m in there. I sound proofed a cabinet for the tumblers and a roll around tool bench with a gun vise. Point the entrance door towards something you can plumb off of and something long range to sight to. Lay it out for reloading. I’m in western Washington, no issues. 3 safes, primers up higher in a cabinet but open
