Dumb question?

I think it pretty tacky making remarks on a open forum about a mans wife even if it is in a joking way, I am mad at my wife about 20 hours per day, we never stop yow yowing at each other but I couldn't nor wouldn't stand for another man yapping to or about her just my $.02 worth on that.

Now my wife bitches 24/7/52 about my gun stuff in the house, I had both spare rooms full her trailer house she had moved in for a storage shed 1/2 full (it's 74'long ) and we have two kitchen tables and one of them was full, she was just about to blow her top and we never stopped fighting about the brown truck always stopping at the house and dropping more stuff off, the house couldn't hold anymore and she was moving out, that wasn't a option for me as I have no clue how to operate a washing machine nor anything else about operating a house hold so I turned part of my machine shed into a loading room, that was about five years ago the house has filled back up and I have crowded he mostly out of the trailer house as well she is about to blow her lid again so I have decided to build a 40'X60' two level loading building with living quarters in a small section for me and she can have the house and crummy old trailer, she has agreed and is willing to even take care of the 12'X40' I am making into the living quarters as long as there is no gun stuff in it, I don't know how long I will be able to keep that promise but I will try. As far as your problem, I would do one or two things, first I wouldn't consider the storage shed, too much chance for a theft, not to mention the other problems already mentioned. I would do as Tom suggested and make a corner of the garage into a small loading area with future plans on a addition to the house, I would tell her if I can't have the spare room I WILL BUILD ANOTHER ONE, but one way or another by thunder I am reloading, I myself can't live without either one, my wife nor my guns so for me I am expanding.

I am young at only 22 years old and I have managed to persuade my mom and dad to convert half of their garage into AC controlled reloading area. The realized that I never stop getting shooting stuff when I can get good deals. Plus I load anything my dad wants to shoot which helps. I moved out of the house to go army up and they converted my room to "work out area", never got used. I slowly kept putting my shooting stuff back in my old room for safe storage until the room had 3 gun safes and a full length reloading station and foldout bed for when I am home from overseas. They did get upset about this until I checked with every storage center in Jacksonville Fl and not a single one allows storage of powder or primers or any other flammables. Many also frown on spending days at a time at the storage facility.
Work into the room slowly and just get her something nice in trade. Ask her if there is a deal you two can work out so you get the room like she gets to store stuff that doesn't get used often in there. Like holiday decorations or things she insists on buying but never uses.
I have dumped every girlfriend that doesn't enjoy shooting, has a problem with me reloading, wants kids, wants to get married and has the nerve to ask me about it, and when they critique my driving. So definitely take any relationship advice from me with a salt lick block upside the head.

Well after reading all of this i must admit that i have many of the same issues. Our house is 7 years old and when i built it she always told me the first and second floors are mine and you can have the basement. So guess what i set the entire basement up as MY Space. Well along came the 2 kids and now they have convinced daddy that they need a section as a play area and i offered up a closet under the stairs to the wife for xmas ornaments that she dont want in the attic. Lastly i allowed the wife to put two clothes drying racks down south. She now throws it in my face all the time about my space and i simply reply "But honey when we were building you told me the first and second floors were yours and i get the basement". By the way how much slack do we get for spending 3 hours + a night in front of this screen????

The way to tackle this is not to go head to head which is always a no win. What works is to have her understand how much this means to you and if it affects you, in the end it affects her….. So it is really a no win for her too to make your life impossible. It’s like kids, you can’t really force them to do what you want but if you can convince them so that they want it themselves, it’s a winner. The trick is how to do this.

I live in Michigan and have done the garage thing when I was doing woodworking and it is not very practical – same with the storage unit idea. Would suggest a compromise which might involve you setting up reloading in the spare bedroom but setting it up in such a manner that it all fits and hid in the closet. That way you get to reload in the house and she gets her spare bedroom. It’s going to be tight but I am sure you can make it work. Works hell of a better than the garage or the storage unit.

A point to ponder......

After moving cross country from the first house we had ever owned/built, we were in a rental condo and the wifey was having a hard time, missed "her" house in MSP big time.

After a week on the new job, I was whining to one of my new co-workers about how the wife already missed our old place. This wise old duffer with about 45 yrs of marriage under his belt said "Rod, you need to remember that the house to a woman, is an expression of her personaility!"

That my friend, was a profund moment of "Wow, that makes sense"........ 8)

After 3 houses, kids and living with my stuff in rubbermaid totes, the wife made sure with the current house that I got a shop/man cave in the basement and the entire garage 36'x28', (except where she parks her car) to houses my boat, motorcycle, fishing gear, toolbox/rollaways, woodworking tools, sausage making/smoking stuff, etc..

My point, paitence my friend. Good women are hard to find and even harder to keep.. But they are worth it and it pays off. Wifey says next house, I get a full blown shop/morton building...

Any guy who says, "I can do what I want, when I want, buy what I want, no woman is gonna tell me what to do... blah, blah, blah." Is full of bullpucky or not married.... ;)

This is a good thread.

Well after the kids moved out it created a few empty rooms, I had success by taking my wife with me. Took her deer hunting and she loved it. Got her a rilfe and loaded the rounds down for easy recoil to start off and now she loves to shoot. Got her a few pistols and she got her CHL. Got her a crossbow last year and she loves that too. The past few years she has spent more days hunting than I do and the reloading room is a requirement. And it's ok that some of her stuff is in pink camo because when I go to the sporting goods store she is right there with me with a wish list as long as mine. She got me a nice new gun safe several years ago for Christmas and life is good. The past few years she has put more meat in the freezer than I have and I'm ok with that too because she has a lot of years to catch up on. Maybe it could work for you too.

As usual excellent post Robert.

We get by with much less dedicated space than Wayne. I have one of our bedrooms for my Office/hobby room, and some of the stuff has overflowed into the second one, there is a small amount in the garage, that I can still park a car in and walk around comfortably. My room gets messy and I bring is back to squared away fairly often. I can only play with so many toys, and I am slowly working at getting rid of what I have not used in a long time. The closer that I get to just keeping what I reasonably expect to used, the better that I like it. Too much unorganized crap, muddies the thought process. On the other hand, when I am in the middle of something, things get set down where ever is handy. Actually, I think that I enjoyed my hobby when there were a lot of things that I did not have, that I could daydream about buying. Now, when I look through catalogs, there is very little that I see that I need and do not have. It is not that I have so much, it is just that I figured out a long time ago that more stuff doesn't necessarily make you happier. Getting down to the real issue here, guys need to gently but firmly defend their space, while being considerate of their wives legitimate points of view. So often I hear women that have a condescending attitude about mens' hobbies. I think that this sort of disrespect needs to be dealt with early on in a relationship.....seriously. On the other hand, I would not want to have our whole house end up looking like my room when I am in the middle of three or four projects at the same time, and for that reason, I don't mind an ocasional question about when I plan on putting a rifle case away. For me, it is all about the tone. Luckily, my wife understands this.

Long time ago I asked my wife:" What is better - reloading/shooting or pubs/and girls?" :)
So far no problems with wife's attitude to reloading. :)

Just a thought but why not organize to load at the range. After accumulating reloading stuff my basement workshop for over 30 years, it was very difficult to imagine how someone could load at the range. Considering the advantages I worked out a system for having everything required in a medium sized chest cooler. Now I use my compact portable loading system all the time even at home. That way setting up and packing is very familiar to me and things are much more tidy at home.

The problem with this for some of is is room, I would need a chest the size of three 45' connex containers to hold it all, I own probably over three hundred sets of reloading dies, four hundred plus pounds of powder, hundreds of thousands of rounds of loaded ammo, several hundred thousand bullets, brass, etc, etc, etc not to mention a truck load of tools and machinery, rifle cases, portable benches, cleaning supplies, the list goes on and on, you can't put that in all in a box, this is more then just a part time hobby for many of us it's a huge part of our lives, a small broom closet just isn't going to do! My wife has a house that is 45'X70' that is chucked clear full of furniture, nick nacks, pictures, and what not, I could easily live in a 12'X12' house with room left over as far as just a place to live but I don't because she requires all of her things to make her happy, and I am good with that, I'll be dammed if I am doing without my things that makes me happy, I went without for years while raising a family and as it should be I was the sole provider as planned, but the kids are raised as a matter of a fact the last one graduates here in a few days and by golly it's time for Daddy to play!! and play I am going to do, I just built myself a new 1000 yard range and I may well put my new shop at the head of it and move up the road a couple of miles, my shooting friends won't be tracking in and out of her house using her bathroom invading her privacy and I won't have to hear all the yow yowing, it's a win win for both of us. Some go big and some stay small, either way is fine but but a mans hobby is just as important to him as hers are to her and after 25 years or so raising a family we deserve at least one small room to relax and enjoy ourselves in, if we can't have that why bother getting up and putting your pants on anymore!! just my thoughts on the subject ;)

Wow Wayne, now that your last child is headed out, can I call you daddy?

No but you can be my friend :) I don't have as much as you might think, I put my values in in other things then most people do Robert, My newest pickup is a 1999 Dodge the one I use the most is a 1991 Dodge, I don't have a boat, I don't have fun toys ( snowmobiles, water toys, atvs for play etc. etc. I live in the house my Grand Dad built in 1960 as a retirement home for him and my grandmother that they never got to use, I got that part of the ranch willed to me and have since purchased the rest ( deeds in the safe ) only a light bill and food, I planned it that way since I was 12 years old, I wanted to be retired by the time I was 45, I missed it by a few years as my youngest came along as I turned 30 and was not expected in my plans so I re planned on 50-52, I am 48 and I think 52 will still work, I won't need much as I have everything already, I may buy myself and the wife a brand new rig a piece and they will last me until internal combustion vehicles are no longer allowed on the roads. Mt very smart old Daddy told me to by everything I wanted why I still had buying power about 18 years ago, it took me about 6 months to figure out what he meant without looking stupid and having to ask him, he was spot on as per usual so I pored on the work load, working the job 12 hours a day and at least another 8 on the ranch sometimes more, I payed everything off and bought everything I thought I could possibly ever need and then some, I have three children and a wife I have had for 27 years, a decent sized Ranch and the only play toys I have ever bought myself in all that time were this gun stuff that I have mostly accumulated in the last 5 years, the thing of it is I payed $1800 for my Bat three lug 6ppc a year ago, it's still worth $1800 and it will be worth that 5 years from now or close to it give or take a little, a atv isn't worth what you paid for it once you load it at the dealers and half a year later and 5 years later barely worth anything so I think I chose the better hobby then many of my friends have, just my thoughts on the subject anyway. I am sorry for kind of side stepping to OP but in reality it is all one in the same, build your self a room and enjoy yourself, some of us needs a whole building to store our stuff and some can do it in a tupperware container, doesn't make one better or more important then the other, it's all about what you can do and what you can afford to make yourself happy, we all deserve a little happiness in our lives.

Posts like this are why this is my favorite forum. My parents look at me silly when I tell them I am buying what makes me happy while I can.

Ah Wayne, did you think that my post was directed at you?
BTW if you have your own range at home then technically you are already loading at the range! :)
Loading at the range can be an interesting option for some even if they have lots of space at home.

Tozguy,
Absolutely not!! my friend and I am sorry if you took it that way, I am very happy that you are able to carry out your hobby anyway you can and if it works for you and your happy all the better, I have two functional ranges here on my place and yes I feel real fortunate about it, my current loading room sits at the edge of my lower field and I can go 940 from the room pretty easy but 600 is even better, with a lot of work I can go 1780 but it is steep and you have to take a atv way around to get to the target, with the new range I can drive to 1000 and a bit further if need be, I enjoy it very much and wished everyone with a gun hobby could have one also but that isn't the case. I look up to people like you that doesn't have a lot but makes do and get's by with what he does have and has fun doing it, your a inspiration to me I would NEVER look down at you!! my place isn't that nice it's just mine that's all!
Sincerely Wayne.
