Reloading Component Shortage Discussion

I have never jumped on any ban wagon. Now......i do not comepete and go through power, bullets and primers as a lot of you do. I can understand when times get crazy people will buy more than they need to make sure they have plenty to continue their sport, matches and what activities they due and that will create a shortage for certain items that are used more often. But this crazy stuff i have seen lately with the semi type weapons and related items......well, it has just gone crazy. I know the saying if you have it and can buy it get it and get all you can. I have no problem with that as it is your money and and you spend it the way you see fit. But IF it ever came down to a society that went out of control and you had to bug out and do alot of moving around to survive, the room or basement full of guns, powder, primers, bullets, brass, reloading equiptment and what ever i left out is not going with you unless you plan on staying in the house as it is burning down or being over run. This is reality. I don't for see it happening at least in my life time in what i have left but you never know. But guys...... i rubbed the majic 8 ball this morning and it said everything is going to be fine when the smoke blows over ;D

:D But I do have all my stuff with me in my motorhome. I may not have as many guns, powder, bullets, etc as a lot of guys on here, but I always have it all with me. ;)

So this past Thursday morning I was looking at Powder Valley, Wideners and a couple other sites. Still showed having plenty of primers and powder for the most part. Came home from work that same night and it was a completely different situation on their listings. A bunch of "Out of Stock" listings on primers. Certain powders took a pretty good hit also. Panic buying? Yeah, I think so.

My local gun store just ran out of primers. This is crazy, people acting like its the end of the world or something, next shipment will have 50% increase in price. Good thing I bought 20,000 on Monday.

And you went back for more?
Gee, I wonder why they ran out??

Fred, your mentality and the same from others is why there is a problem.
Don't you get it?

Are you going to shoot 20,000 rounds next year?
Do you actually think that in the case of some kind of collapse you'll be able to use 20,000 rounds in defense before your shot?

totally agree

And some people do finally get it . Tho 20,000 isn't very many if you are a high volume shooter . This guy stepped up and took care of business. compliments Sir . Curious though , flaunting this in front of the world and the unwilling , poor judgment me thinks .

people: remember this. the majority of reloading components are a secondary market. the majors sell what they don't use in their ammo business as reloading components. the demand for 223, 7.62x39,308,9mm,40s&w,45acp,380acp,38spl,357mag has, once again, gone off the charts. unless and until the ammo production catches up, components will be in short supply. add to that hoarding, what do you expect? really folks if you use 1k primers a year must you buy 30k? i work in a small mom and pop store. i reload. i bought, before this latest meldown, a one year supply. i will not panic buy. as they come in i will replace the ones i use. fyi, none of the others in th shop are panic buying either. please try to keep you heads when all around are loosing theirs.

I usually shoot 3-4K target and hunting rounds a year and after the last shortage I told myself to always be prepared.
I try to keep 2 years worth of primers, 1-2 years worth of powder and I buy between 500 and 1000 pcs of brass for each rifle depending on cartridge and it's use. hunting guns I may only buy 200 pcs of brass.
The end result of this is I don't feel the need to stock up right now. In 6-9 months things will be getting back to normal and components will be available. By stocking up with 5-10 years worth of stuff is ridiculous, everyone should have learned that the last go around.

Components and ammunition are analogous to a commodities market. The supply side of this market has not changed; everything is still being made and will still be sold.

The only thing that has abruptly changed in this market is the sudden increase in demand, brought about by the obvious fear, uncertainty and doubt in the political realm. Consumer panic only feeds and magnifies the effect. Fear stokes shortages. Shortages beget hoarding, Ad nauseam.

IMO, keep on hand what you need for a year or maybe even two. Anything more than that and you're just stoking the flames of an irrational cycle. aka being part of the problem.

one of the main reasons I stock up before situations like this is to head off a higher cost when the dealers do restock. I recently purchased fed. gold primers for $45/1000. I guarantee you in six to nine months when things so called settle down you'll be paying close to $60/1000. it is never a bad thing to hoard or over stock on reloading/ammo components. I guarantee you will not loose money. Primers, powder, brass, bullets have never gone down in price...only thing that has gone down recently is my salary..lol

You don't shoot Competition, do you? Jf you had, you would understand the need to find a manufacturing LOT that WORKS, and buy all you can afford. The sport is about eliminating variables, and this is a no-brainer. Should a new barrel dictate a change in components, it's pretty easy to trade or sell. The value invested in components increases, as the dollar drops- and it's headed off a cliff.
