Reloading Accessories/Equipment

shoedo said:
I started reloading in 1991 on a Dillon Square Deal Press, quit for almost 20 years and recently started acquiring items to get back into reloading about five years ago but have yet to actually load one round for various reasons. I recently itemized all of my equipment/accessories etc and have a total of 9,100 dollars. I am convinced that unless I get started actually reloading I will never reach the break even point. What about you? Have you noticed how one purchase leads to yet another?

For me it was never about money. Started in 1963, it was about learning and producing more accurate ammo than what was being sold. The knowledge, enjoyment, pride, and end results all equal a priceless long trip.
Many times it's not the destination but the journey itself that is the most rewarding.

thanks for info

Add it up.
I shoot and reload and shoot matches again and again.

So does our son. $0

So does his son. $0

Daughter of
Another sibling. $0

Total. $0
Sounds about right
No drugs, no excessive drinking, no school problems, no traffic problems
We've saved about $2,000,000.00 See? Shooting is cheap.

Look at how much you are saving. A shrink is probably $175/hr or more these days. One trip per week for 18 months and you have spent much more than you have invested. Look at it as therapy. You can sell your equipment later and get most or more of your investment back. Check out the market for used psychiatric sessions, you will find a minimal market, excluding Ebay.

I'm curious about the break even part ..

There's a break even part??

Not in my lifetime :(

+1 Sorry Virginia, but there is no break even point on FUN. :D

In 1975 when I began to handload using a Lee Load All, there were no premium factory loads available as there are today. The only way to load Nosler particians was to hand load. I had one rifle and a pile of once fired brass of various brands. The most accurate factory amo I had fired was Winchester 150 gr Power Points which grouped at about 2" in my Ruger 77. K-mart sold it for about $16 per box, and sometimes it went on sale for about $12 per box. Supplies were variable and often none was available. The local sportinggoods store had ammunition available at all times but usually about 10-15% more. I wanted to shoot more and the only way I could see to do that was to handload. I probably recouped the cost of my initial Load All, a can of IMR4320, 100 Win LR primers and a box of Speer 150 gr spritzers with the first 100 rounds. But the real reward was the 1.25" groups I shot with that load. I was hooked. Now many thousands of rounds later with many more rifles, several thousand dollars more equipment, I have probably just about broken even but I only hunt with premium bullets, only compete with match grade bullets, and haven't bought a box of factory rounds since about 1980. I regularly get sub 1 MOA groups with my match and hunting rifles and am able to afford to shoot as much as I want.

It's fun to look at the original reloading equipment I bought when I was still in high school. My Ohaus 10 10 scale has a price tag of $30. My powder tricker was around $3. Up until a few years ago when I used the last of it, I had a can of Winchester 630 powder that had a tag of $3 and change. I used to buy a pound of Unique and they would pour it into a paper sack. It was definitely about saving money back then. Certainly has turned into an enjoyable hobby over the years and I'm still learning new things all the time.
