Reloading 45 ACP But....

Since the weather here is freezing it's time to reload so I got out my 45 ACP cases, cleaned and deprimed and when sorting out the different brands I noticed that the Blazer brass had small pistol primers instead of large pistol primers like the other brands. My question is what kind of small primers should I use, regular, magnum or something else?

BTW they were loaded with 230gr plated round nose bullets if that helps.

just small pistol and the same load as your large primer stuff.
unlikely you will tell the diff unless you have a cheap 45 with an off center firing pin

just watch out for the WIN NT.....crimped primer

I would chuck the small primers and stick with the large. I have heard there is a loss in accuracy and fouling the barrel. The manufacturers used the sp to save .33 cents per round.

where do people find such stories ???
if you are a bullseye shooter ..yes you can tell the difference in the two primers. the average shooter and the average gun will never know. and no it is not about cost. there is more brass in a small primer 45aacp case so there goes the so called cost savings...which at the manufacture level is probably a whole lot less than $0.33. it all started over "clean" shooting( non toxic). the only clean pistol primer is small so winchester built 45acp in small primer. others have followed...ruining the 45acp brass recycling business. there are six manufactures that make small primer 45acp ammo that i am aware of....best to just sort it and load it separate. i have done it no big deal.

Since I reload small and large, I'll just sort them out. My main concern was if I had to use magnum primers instead to make up for the size difference.

Watch out for blazer aluminum cases.....and I have had problems with A-merc brand having loose primer pockets right out of the gate.

Aluminum I don't load and I'll keep an eye out for loose pockets also.

I won't even try to reload A-merc brass; it goes straight into the recycle bucket.

I just processed a bunch of range brass from my last pistol outing. My progressive loader started jamming. Found a bunch of new Federal small primer pockets...

I hope they all do not go this route!

look back..there are atleast SIX manufactures that currently include a small primer version of 45acp.

some of the blaser aluminum cased ammo has BOXER primers.
reloading a case designed for single use is dumb..but i have seen it done....just dumb.

That may be true, out of the 200+ cases I have about 40 of them are Blazer brass with the small primer and the entire case is almost perfectly clean including the primer hole. I would love to know what powder they use.

Evidently you have not tried to reload CCI .45 aluminum. I have a dozen twice fired laying here on my bench that I reloaded and fired just to see how they would shoot. Used small pistol primers. Nice tight fit. Shot just as good as brass. I would not recommend repeated firings because the aluminum surely will not liked to be reworked. Later! Frank

I guess they have changed it - one of the big points when they first introduced Blaser was that it used special primers and could not be reloaded.
