Reloader 15 in the “X”

Bottom Fodder

Silver $$ Contributor
I’ve been running Varget and 107 SMK’s in my 16” Savage Striker 6BrX
Couple weeks ago I tried Reloader 15
Shooting side by side with my Varget load My SD and ES was lower, Groups smaller , MV about the same with the R15 so all looked good but this was at a cool 65 Degs. This summer when it’s 95 degs. How much of a change do you think I will see with the Reloader 15? Advice is always welcome

Being one to adjust my charges for ambient, in my 6Dasher's I would adjust RL15 around .3-tenths from 65 to 95-F. But all aspects of the load besides the powder charge itself can have effect to how much adjustment is needed, that takes testing for each ones own unique scenario's - IME.

I am abandoning H4895 in favor of Re15 in my 6BRA. I also am planning to use some 8208 XBR. I have fought with H4895 for two years and 4 different lots. It may be me but I am too old to keep beating a dead horse. I shot 5, 3-shot groups yesterday at 200 yards with two bullets and XBR along with Re15. The groups measured 0..287, 0.456, 0.251, 0.380, and 0.445. This was a BAT/Leonard with 28 inch Lederer barrel and I loaded 30.4 gr of XBR and 31.5 gr. of Re15. I was shooting Bart's 105 Hammers and Berger 105 Hybrids.

RL15 drove me crazy in a hunting rifle due to temp change during the day. Like an always changing zero. Went back to Varget and never looked back. RL15 did shoot great though, just awkward for a long distance coyote rifle. :D:D

I'm with Donovan on this one you had better go out under real world conditions and check each powder you may want to use. The test you see for temperature insensitive powders are in artificial conditions and do not correspond to real world testing when all components are at say 40 degrees, 60 degrees and 80 degrees. I found all the powders I tested were at the 1 fps. per degree range. This was including Varget, H4350 and H4895, so RL-15 8208 are in the same ball park. So test on your own and keep notes and use what shoots best and don't believe all the BS. and hype. about temperature and sensitivity ...... jim

For me, RL-15 does not work in the summer here in Central Texas. Too temperature sensitive.

Really, what isn't, I shot at near a 100 degrees with RL-15 and without issues. Adjust the loads on all powders for the temperature.Reading about how insensitive one is sure don't mean a thing. I was in the butts pulling targets at 40 degrees and a lot were hitting the dirt with their temperature insensitive powder loads.... jim

Good stuff from both sides of the court
Keep those cards and letters coming
Ok for the once that adjust if your shooting a none max load are you adjusting to match the MV that shot the best in your test load
Basically if @65degs your load shot 2700
But @ 95 degs it @ 2800 ( just #’s)
Is your 1st goal to back off load to
To get the MV down to 2700 then tune from there

I agree with Jim I have won more with RL 15 then all the others combined in temps from 50s to near 100

Find out when it's 95 for yourself as was previously stated. BRX Varget shooter here no need to change, has been working well in multiple barrels for many. years. 16 in barrel, Sriker in 6 BRX, what competition game do you shoot?

300-600 1/2 MOA dot match, 300 to 600 Br match and Mid-Range 600 F Class
Next year we’re adding 1k. These are on private ranges (invite)and are non sanction matches the 600 Br and FClass use E target so will the 1k

I am curious why you went to the BRX over straight br in that short barrel. The BRX has treated me well but I guess I never thought of it in a confuguration such as yours. Good luck.Is this a handgun only competition or is that just what you chose to shoot Here in Pa we use to have a fellow who competed in 500 yd groundhog matches with handguns against us rifle shooters. He never won but put up some decent scores.

Jeffppc Because you ask I was hoping to get straight Br performance (MV) from the 16” “specialty pistol” the “x” is running in the 2700 range with 107’s so I think I’m close My goal was a 600+ Yrd. cartridge that I could shoot with out a break. And yes These are Rifle matches shooting “pistols” is just my MO . The last Mid-Range (600) FClass I shot 594 22x I didn’t win but I didn’t come in last ether lol. thanks for you input

Brx6, Keep doing what you enjoy and kudos for not jumping on the muzzle brake crutch.
Regardless of what the brake group proclaims, it does intefere with other shooters, a practice otherwise frowned upon. One thing for sure, between 40 degree temp swings you will need some load tweaking to be at your best.

Richard you are doing very impressive things with that 16” Canon. It will not be long before we have to put you in separate class. so we will not get our feelings hurt lol.

I don’t think me or anybody else going to dethrone you anytime soon :confused:the 1k matches going to cull us wannabes outo_O

How would you'll rate 15 for cleaning up after several rounds ? The reason I ask is that I fired about 12 rounds in a Savage chambered in 6 CM, got it home, thought it would be an easy clean, WRONG, Still not clean, I'm switching to 8208, 4064, or VVN 140
