reloader 15 in the 6br?

Just starting out with the load development in this 1 in 8 twist rifle.Everyone said Varget is the only way to go..Not in my rifle..30 gr and cci mag primers shoots about 2 1/2 inch at 200 yards with 107 SMK seated to just touch the lands..

I have read where other guys went to the reloader 15 with better results.

Anyone here tried it? I shot 5 shots only at my little 80 yard target out back..4 in close to one hole, but that does not tell me much for my goal of 250 yards for the f class match...Share your thoughts on this please..Thanks

I use it a lot in my 6br's, one rifle likes a lot of it and the other not so much..
Back those SMK's off .040, and start over again still using the same powder weight......
Then go back out .010 at a time till you find it....

Some of the guys I know that are serious BR shooters just use RL15 in their 6br's. A little more temp sensitive than Varget but they claim its better. I have just used Varget in my 6brx as I found a good load and never saw a need to change it .

Hey CoCo, I use RL-15 AND Varget... Both equally as accurate as the other. My RL-15 load is 105 Hybrid, 15K off the lands, 30.0grs and a CCI 450 primer. Velocity is just above 2800f.p.s. Accuracy (on a cloudy, nearly windless day) is under 3/4" 5 shot group at 300>>>Not EVERY group is like that, but 6 out of 10 are. My Varget load is 30.3grs with everything else exactly the same.. It shoots to the same point of impact @ 300 yards BUT goes 80f.p.s. faster, probably due to the .3gr. larger charge.. Now, I shoot in Houston, Texas where temp swings from morning to afternoon will be 25+ degrees more>>>sometimes A LOT more! So "extreme powders" are really the way to go here. However, having said that, I used to shoot VV N150 with the BEST accuracy and shotstrings, of ANY powder! My shotstrings were under 6f.p.s. E.S.! I had MANY groups well under 1/2" @ 300 yards with that powder! It was before the "hybrid" craze and I used the Berger 105 BT seated 15K off the lands and 30.4grs of N150 and a BR4 primer.. But when summer approached, it felt the effects of real Texas HEAT! So I switched to Varget. Do not count RL-15 as anything but a worthy powder!

well give it a try......do you suppose my little 80 yard shot is any indication of what it will be out at 250? Just curious is all

If your shotstrings are tight and it is consistent as far as accuracy goes, it may very well hold out to 300 and beyond>>>you will just have to try and see!

I started a post a month or so ago on the same subject. Do a search and she will pop up. The 6br is very easy to find a load for. I have found that different loading techniques also work for the same gun. Example : i loaded 50 rounds with a standard Redding full length die pushing the shoulder back 2 thousandths. Then i loaded the next 50 using a Forster bushing bump die also pushing the shoulders back 2 thousandths and used a 266 bushing. Both methods yielded the same results. Im sure the Redding die is putting more neck tension on the bullet than the 266 bushing. Varget is my go to powder and the same charge weight works with 80gr Bergers and also 105-107's. This is out of a Savage LRPV with a factory tube. The bolt had some minor tuning done to it and there is a 3" wide flat plate bedded to the front end for help riding the bag. CCi 450 or BR-4 primers also yield the same results. With the 80 grainers she is extremely hard to beat at 200 yards even with high dollar custom rigs. This was my first of 4 6Br's and i did extensive load development to see exactly what made a difference and what didnt affect groups. Now 2 of the others will get some attention as soon as our weathers breaks here in Pa.

COCO
I HAVE TRIED RL-15 AND VARGET MY RIFLE LIKES VV-N540 BETTER NUMBERS AND MORE CONSITENT WITH THE 450 CCI'S 105VLD'S 2850FPS 30'' SMSHILEN BARREL

RL-15 is a bit dirty, but shoots very well for most even though it temp sensitive.
I can go up to 29.9gr in the summer without any pressure signs with cci-450 primer.
I think there was a winner in the Williamsport 1000 yds shoot using this powder.

I have had good results with both the H4895 and VV N540 in the 6BR. My Dasher loves the RL 15 for the 115 DTACs.
I have also found if a good match bullet shoots well (1/4 MOA) at 100 it will do well to 1K. JMHO

I shot 30.3 of rl15 behind a 105 hybrid moly coated. Rl15 works better for me than varget. I get good velo out of a 28' 1-8 teist(2850ish) rl15 hold a better elavation at 1K than varget does.

Coco R-15 is a really good powder for what you are shooting in that 6br. If you've got it bug holing at 80yds it will shoot as good as you can shoot it out to 3-400yds. Several things I've learned on the R-15, 1) don't be afraid to change primers to tighten your group. Even a lowly winchester SR primer can be of good use sometimes. ::) 2) Most if not all of the dirty & Temp sensitive stuff that you read about is not the norm for R-15. Keyboards have done no justice for it. It might be dirty in one shooter's rifle, but that is not true in all cases all rifles. I've been using it in my 6br for 6 years, a 6xc for 4 years, and a 17rem for just over a year..... with no issues. WD

Good morning----Thanks for all the replies..I appreciate it very much..Like I said in my above post..The varget did not do well for me with the 107's

But from what I am seeing with the reloader 15...I am going to do some more test with it..I was totaly surprised when I shot that tiny group at home on my short range..SO thanks again..John

I beg to differ about the temp sensitivity, and how dirty RL-15 is. My 6BR shot phenominal groups with a stout load of RL-15 in 50 degree ambient temperature with 105 BT's. But when it got to 70 degrees outside, HEAVY boltlift, and groups opened up. The matches where I shoot, the temp will start out in the low 50's and 5 hours later, be 70 + degrees. I've never seen my Kreiger bbl dirtier with powder fouling, than after shooting 16 shots of RL-15.

Just got back from the range breaking in the barrel on my 6BR using Reloader 15 and Berger 105 VLD. The 6 BR is new to me so I started at 28.5 grain and move up to 30.1 grain in .20 grain increment. At 30.2 grains I notice extractor mark on the case head. Velocity at 30.1 grain was around 2911 fps. I think this is max in my rifle. I'm still fire forming so I can't tell which load is accurate. This powder is dirty. I will try Varget next.

I just read about some using imr 4320 in the 6br. They say the burn rate is about the same as varget.
I'm going to try it. Anybody else ever use this?

I hope you guys see how dirty and temp. sensitive RL-15 is, so take all you have back to the store and trade it for Varget and VV powder. Let me know, so i can run down there and buy it........... :)... jim

why can't you keep your ammo in a cooler on those hot days...I have done it befor with no issues what so ever...or at least in the shade out of the sun..

The last match that I shot with RL-15, I did that exactly. The bolt lift was still very hard to open. I am not bashing RL-15, just want people to know my experience with it.
