Reliable scales for weighing your rifle

well to follow up I purchased a digital scale based on the comments here. I am at 17lbs 6.7oz for my F/TR rifle. It still had the screw in scope covers on it. I never really knew for sure and did not want to travel to an event and be illegal/overweight.
thanks for all the feedback.

Everyone seems to do it backwards, when you build a gun. you know the weight each piece so there are no surprises after it is all together. It should be under and allow you to add weight to balance it..... jim

in this case I purchased the rifle from the shooter John Whidden built it for. He told me the weight without scope and rings. I selected the scope and rings based on that information and then added a Doan Trevor walnut grip and a delrin single feed magazine. I have plans to travel for some shoots and needed to satisfy myself that the gun would make legal weight.

Yes, you need to know in advance before you head to a match. I hope we get to shoot a couple here but it is getting bad around here now..... jim

I ( or if you know someone that has access) use a refrigeration gas scale. They are designed to weigh in refrigerate gas by the ounce. Very accurate scales and have a zero function. Any HVAC person will have one.

P.S. One thing of note, I was having my gun weighed at a match and made a comment about if the bathroom scale they where using was accurate. I was told that it didn't matter what I weighed my gun with somewhere else, it was what it weighed at the match, regardless the quality of their scale....

If it’s an registered match they must provide a certified check weight to prove out the scales accuracy and or set the scale by. So if you request the certification of the scale weight to be verified they must provide this.

2 A scale with certified weights shall be set up near the firing line at all Registered Tournaments
1163 requiring weight limits on rifles. Competitors may use this equipment prior to and during the
1164 matches. A certified weight is one certified by a State Agency or a private company offering
1165 certified weights.
1166 Certified Master Weights are required at all Registered Tournaments. Scales should have a
1167 zeroing pointer. Scales must be balanced and leveled including the one-ounce error factor. Scales
1168 are to be set up in a reasonably permanent location and should remain at this location for the
1169 duration of the Tournament.

The OP did not mention a shooting discipline, my comment was based on my experience with F-Class. Just curious is if the rules you have mentioned happen to be in Benchrest ?? If those rules are in the NRA Highpower book, I missed them....

Yes IBS long range benchrest. Truthfully that rule should apply to any registered match of all disciplines.

I still weigh triggers with water weight (like in service rifle) and have been known to use gallon jugs and a balance beam to weigh a rifle before. The empty jugs usually can be tarred on a powder scale.

My wife bought a very pricey scale from amazon that weighs to the second decimal . My rifle with scope caps on , with Bipod weighed 17.40 lbs...Sunshield never comes off . Not to worried , but I will verify before October .

Didn't read the elevnty seven posts, but I take mine across the street to the local supermarket and use their meat scale. Certified !!

I bought this shipping scale about 10yrs. ago and it is quite accurate.
When I started shooting 1000 yd. benchrest at Pella, Iowa, this scale
gave me identical weights for my rifles at home as the "range scale".
It checks out with Vapor Trail Valley's scale as well.

Thanks for sharing this. Found a "used" box has slight damage, on Amazon for $24 & Free Shipping.

I do use the Post Office. I ask the day prior and go in the end of the next day. Cased with bolt out, along with bi-pod, mirage shield and rain shield. Never had an issue working with my post office to weigh my rifles. It could also depend on where you live. All they can say is NO ! I haven't had them turn me down yet.
