Right now I'm picturing someone laying an 18 to 22 lb rifle on top of their expensive analytical balance. It isn't a pretty picture.

Balances of reasonable quality are readily available online for weighing things such as postal and food items. They don't have to be expensive. I'd suggest choosing one where the total weight of your rifle is no more than half the maximum weight the balance can handle. I bought the following Chinese balance a couple years ago for just that purpose and it has worked quite well:

Edited to add: I also purchased a 4 kg calibration weight off of ebay so as to be able to calibrate/test the balance. It cost substantially more than the balance itself.

Much like my local butcher shop. Every time I go weigh a rifle, it draws a crowd. I did buy a cheap mail scale off Amazon, but I go use certified scales before heading to Nationals.

A&D EJ 123 and a Ohaus RCBS 5-10 .

The 123 is not fast ... It cost less ,retired not in a Rush.

If my Trump Check comes in ??? Maybe that High End FX with the Auto Dump ???

I use a Mettler Toledo certified scale that will weigh up to 100 pounds or so and a complete set of NBRSA check weights so when a rifle leaves here I know the exact weight whether its a hunting rifle or for competition.

I have a scale designed for vegetables and meat that is accurate to 0.005 lbs. But it only goes up to 15 lbs, so I often need to weigh the action and stuff connected to it separately from the stock and stuff connected to it.

I have a hanging scale accurate to 0.01 lbs that goes to 100 lbs, but this requires attaching a cord to hang it from.
