Release triggers

I would like to install a release trigger in my BT99, are there kits that I can purchase or do I have to go to a gunsmith to have this work done?

They are usually gunsmith built and installed. I've been out of the trap game for a long time so I don't know who is doing them any more. You might check into Shotgun Sports magazine or trapshooters.com

It's not really a band aide. Guys that develop a flinch over hundreds of thousands of rounds many times have no other choice than to stop shooting or go to a release trigger. You rarely see a younger or middle age shooter using one. The only place you'll ever see one is at a trap range and that's the only place for them. Yes I've seen guys AD them but I've seen a lot more pull triggers AD and shoot the trap house... By the time a shooter ends up needing a release they're a usually a very experienced shooter and hopefully have safety well ingrained.

I will say that if you don't have a bad flinch that you haven't tried to work through for a while, don't fk with one! It's a last resort fix.

swd is correct. I've got a flinch that was one of the causes that made me quit shooting organized clays...I duck hunt still but my clay days are over. I never went to a release trigger but they are as he said a last resort fix. Mine would show but between 2-4 shots per 100...my trigger finger would pull the trigger without my brain telling it to. Never not in the field of play but enough that it showed up one morning on a duck hunt, I shot straight into the water and it was 3' below where any ducks were...that is when I quit shooting clays. It's a very unnerving thing to have happen...never has happened since I started shooting rifles.

+1 Tried one once, hated it and scared the hell out of me.

I shoot a little trap also and sometimes my trigger doesn't get fully pulled.

Real men don't flinch------my biggest problem is too many years of shooting
Jewell triggers with their short, light pull.

I had an old time M12 gunsmith lighten my trigger and it was a big help. My O/U
trap gun has a heavier pull and I need to think about a more bold trigger pull. More
shooting helps me

I'm old and shoot with a few other oldsters but don't think this general group of
shooters should be on the line with release triggers.

I'm not ready to give up my DL or my Jewell triggers.

Flinching is a mind game, too much recoil. Trap shooters have every hanging on the it is like recoil reducers, ported barrels, back bored. you name it. get a soft kicking auto, instead of your fancy high-priced single barrel and over and under with the gold chickens. I watched one the best sporting clays shooters winning with a ratty old 391...... The BT99 will kick your face off.... Jim

I shot 1090fps cream puff loads for everything, singles, doubles and handicap, all the way back to 27 yards out of my Perazzi. They pattern tighter and more even and ink ball targets from the 27 yard line better than a 1280 handicap load. Easy on the body and the gun. Zero difference in perceived lead, about 3" on an average target from the 27 yard line. Guys think they need fast loads for better scores, they don't have a clue.

BT99's are way too light, they'll kick the crap out of you for sure. Weight them up to about 9-9.5lbs and they'll kick less and swing smoother. Do that and put a 1090 load in it and you'll be in heaven.

And the first few times I shot a release, just for fun, they made me flinch, lol. Not natural until you get used to it. But I never had the need for one.

I don't have a flinch or want one, but some day I will get one :) I tried a release trigger last Sunday and loved it, I have the Gracoil recoil reduction and shoot 1200 to 1250 loads and the BT99 doesn't Kick as bad as my Citori. I shot 300 rounds of 1250's and didn't bother me at all. The day it starts to bother me I will change shells. My friends shoot 1200's for everything and shoot very well. Can't wait to get the kit installed. I bench rested shot all morning and I will be sore from bending over tomorrow :(

I used to shoot trap some. not registered shoots but just fun and games at the local trap club. There were a few older guys that came that shot registered shoots for years and one guy used release triggers in quite a few of the guns he showed up with. He was a Model 12 nut and shot those for registered birds with a release trigger. One night we decided to play this game that whenever someone got put out you passed your rifle to guy to your left. Try operating a model 12 with a release trigger, it was something else trying to unload that thing when you didn't want to shoot after you already had the trigger pulled in and ready to go. Good times!

If it's match season, and especially before an important match, I stay away from my shotguns. My subconscious having been in two stage rifle mode, gets suddenly switched to single stage hard pulling trigger. That's no a big deal, but when going back to my match rifles, I spend some time dry firing, because sure as I live and breath, those light two stages will seemingly go off on their own the first few times.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

You are right sir, I have cases of 1 1/8 oz. new stuff sitting on the shelves and it kicks too much. I also shoot 1 oz. and 7/8oz. loads but I sold my K guns and at 75 went back to my old 1100 trap and a new Beretta auto but it is tuff for me having to go left handed, not much to choose from.....
